Cuba motorcycle rental?

Now that Americans can vacation in Cuba, it's time I make my way over there, but I want to experience cuba properly and that would of course include a motorcycle :mchappy:

I'm planning on 7-10 days. Anyone know of any places that rent motorcycles or how I could get my hands on one for a week? MC travel (motorcyclecuba) is the only agency I'm aware of, but you can't straight out rent a bike, only do a scheduled tour with the company. Any help advice greatly appreciated.

I've read on other forums that there are no places to straight out rent a motorcycle in Cuba. I found several where you can rent scooters but that just wouldn't be the same. If you find a place keep us informed. I would love to make the same trip some day.

I guess this question's going to come up a lot. Here's my answer on That Other Forum: Cuba | Adventure Rider.

Private rentals are illegal. The scooters are step-through style, and although they look fun enough they're not really suited (or, for that matter, legal) for long trips.

Hope that's helpful.

Hmph, why not? There are many, including myself, who have travelled vast distances internationally on scooters / small motorcycles, including myself at around 100,000 miles.

Last time I visited Cuba (1991) I stayed in Cienfuegos (near Trinidad) and had a great time renting a small local scooter which I rode both on and off road. Sadly, I have no more recent information.

You can still rent scooters in Cienfuegos. You can rent them in Trinidad, too. It's illegal to take them out of the province in which they were rented, and for most of us it would be impractical at best to try to cover "vast distances" on them in the time we've got available for such trips (c.f., the OP, with 7-10 days available).

That doesn't mean scooters are not useful, interesting, fun or worthy. And: YMMV.

Since I posted, I've read the same as you guys have posted (no motorcycles, but can rent scooters without leaving the province).

There does seem to be some risk involved with police. Read posts of rentals not always being legal and getting into trouble with police. Plus if any type of accident happens it can land you in jail based on inadequate insurance. Might be a good idea for a day or two but does not seem like a possible option to ride around the island unless you do a tour.
