Richsuz: We'll probably reach Guatemala round August 15, and I will stay in contact to see if we can all ride together. It seems we're just whizzing through the eastern parts though for three days or so. But the itinerary isn't set in stone.

Cheers

I will keep my eyes open for a bike and your arrival. Could you give me more details on the type of bike you are looking for? For you dont seem kin on the 200cc offroad bikes. 250 to 400 touring bikes are rare in this part of the world. My wife rides a Yamaha YS250, equivalent to the YBR250, she goes everywhere on it, including crossing river beds 15in deep, but we recognize that the ground clearance is low and that the 17 in tires are very undersized. But for about $2000, Jap bike, the only used option I can think of is a Honda twister. Other than that its got to be some type of dirt/enduro-ish bike. I don't know your built (inseam, height, etc) But I really think you could benefit from a chinese bike like the ones used in Belize. Seat comfort may be an issue. That time of the year, the roads will have a lot of debris, and potholes will be in abundance, and the long travel suspension and 21"front wheels are very helpful.

BTW, how is this as a place to visit. It is in the NE side of the country.

I'm afraid I don't have any information about renting, but according to the Honda web site the 400cc Falcon NX4 dual-sport is still sold in Mexico. If Victoria is thinking of buying a used bike in Mexico and selling it in Costa Rica or Panama, something like that might be an option. They have been around for a while so it seems as though it should be possible to find used ones in a range of condition/price.

Thanks, Craig.

Richsuz: There is a good chance Garry Dymond has found me a 250 Yamaha Fazer in Mexico. So maybe hold on for a while till that's confirmed. I'll let you know, thanks x a million.
The two links both look amazing - the Las Conchas one is closer to our route so might work better. I'm just checking with my friend as he has a schedule to keep for his research. Fingers crossed, would be great to meet you!

I will second Richard's suggestion. My friend Felipe runs Oasis Chiyu and it has become one of my favorite places here in Antigua. Great riding in the area as well!

When you guys make it to Antigua, be sure to come by Moto Cafe and share some stories with fellow motorcyclists, join us for a ride, or just have a beer!

Always great to meet riders.

I'll also keep a look out in Guatemala - thanks for all the info, richsuz - and if you hear of a 250-400cc bike that's, say, around USD2,000, then please let me know. Is that price being too optimistic?

Probably right about the bikes with Emma, but you should stop by in her place anyways if you get a chance. Cool girl and give you good local advice.

As far bikes in Guatemala - maybe I can help. I get people coming and going looking to sell/buy. Off hand, I know a guy looking to sell a Honda 250 Twister, I have a '81 BMW R65, and maybe more will pop up.

What's the latest with your search?

Hi Chris

It looks like I have found a used bike in Mexico - 250cc Yahama - through amazing help by Garry Dymond.

But hopefully we can make it to the cafe in Antigua and say hello. We might only stick to the north-east part of the country, though, but not sure yet.

Richsuz: still keen on a trip together, and so is my pal. Will be in touch with a better idea of dates soon. Will PM you my email address.

That Fazer is an amazing bike. My wife rides a YS250, which is our Brazilian version. I did not think they sold it in Mex...
150 kms/g, much more efficient than my 125, lots of torque, top speed about 130 km/h. And we take it everywhere, if you have FB, you can check out our last adventure through mud and rivers, mind you its a little challenging without dirt tires, but quite efficient in all terrains. You'll be happy with it. That bike sells here for about Q20,000 (USD$ 2500) used. I did not consider this bike for you, as you wanted a DP bike which is not.

Congrats on finding a ride, always exciting!

Safe travels and let us know if you make it this way.
