Best border crossing from US to Mexico in next 7 days?

I'm still deciding whether or not to take the Baja route or not, but, irrespective of that, where's best for crossing into Mexico from the USA at the moment?

Thanks!

Any crossing will be just fine. If you're a bit timid and riding solo - be easy on yourself and pick a quieter border crossing. For instance, if you're going down Baja, skip Tijuana and ride 45 minutes east to Tecate. Much less chaotic and the people will be more laid back. (Note, you can't get a TVIP at Tecate but you'll be able to get one in La Paz before you take the ferry to mainland).

Have a great ride!:mchappy:

San Luis is a calmer crossing, too. If you cross between 7 am and 10 pm pst (the time the crossing is open), Algodones just west of Yuma is the proverbial "one-horse town" but I am pretty sure you won't get any paperwork there for what you need further south.

Sod it - I'll throw myself in at the deep end and cross at Tijuana and figure out where to go from there... I'd rather have the paperwork sorted and be able to ride worry free from there on! Thanks!

How about doing the EXIT paperwork for the bike in Tecate? Possible? Or do I need to do that in La Paz as well?

Pete, let us know how the crossing goes. Good luck to ya.

Also let me know your route. I am in central mexico at the moment but I know Alex and Tom are coming down the Baja route very soon.

The crossing was completely pain free - I sailed through and into Tijuana at about 9am and in doing so spied the nearly invisible immigration office. A short while later I had a stamp in my passport and a fresh tourist card! The directions to get the tvip went over my head so I decided to get it in La Paz!

I ended up on the route 1 toll road and got me the hell out of Tijuana and headed south! I'm now in La Paz having got my ferry ticket and tvip this morning - another pain free affair! I'll in Mazatlan on Friday morning - not sure where to go from there yet though...

In terms of advice, route 1 is amazing in places and mind numbingly dull in others - the ride from Loreto to La Paz is a prime example of that! On the way, I highly recommend the town of San Ignacio, after a day riding across the desert it's the perfect rest spot! Oh and the Baja Cactus hotel in El Rosario - the best bargain on the planet if you get one of the new rooms... Genuine luxury for just 300 pesos!
