REI Rainier Rain Pant

Full separating zipper at the waist for each leg - come in short, regular and tall sizes - rei's equivalent 2.5 layer waterproof / breathable material to the marmot precip pants you mention - they have a big enough leg circumference for motorbike pant with alpinestars sx1 knee guard (size L) and garne sg12 mx boots (US size 11) to fit under - I buy them 1 size larger (xl) than my regular size (L) to go over everything - they have a draw cord in the waist that can be tied - I wear 34 or 35 inch waist jeans - good luck!

I grabbed a pair of rain pants from the jumble in my closet while (over)packing for Vietnam last week. Had an occasion to put them on yesterday, and as luck would have it they’re lightweight, have full leg zips and a peculiar, but functional adjustable elastic waist—all of which I experienced as if for the first time based on this thread.

They do not have pockets or a fly, but the two-way leg zips are easily opened from the top to access....whatever. They’re Marmot Precips, same as others have mentioned.

No one would mistake them for anything heavy duty or super durable, but aside from that they’re fine. You can look them up, but I recall them costing under a hundred bucks, which to me seems cheap.

Oh, and by opening the sippers all the way from the bottom I can get them on and off without resorting to the foot-in-plastic-bag trick, which is good—I didn’t pack any plastic bags.

Hope that’s helpful.

Ok ok ok I finally got my rain pants.

That I can put on, standing up, with my boots on.

Made the damn things myself. And they work like a charm. Fully waterproof on one good test so far. And was cheap as chips. I'll lay out what I did here in case anyone else wants to do the same.

Bodge job rain pants! :thumbup1:

I ordered just a regular pair of waterproof pants with taped seams online, and also some velcro, and a little box of plastic popper buttons and the tool to fix them, all costing about 30 bucks.

I usually wear large size pants, with a 33 inch waist, so I ordered XXL wetpants, just to be sure. I cut them right up each side, the cut being a bit behind the hip. I sewed the elastic on either side of both cuts at the hip before I chopped them, so I wouldn't lose the elastic.

Then I fixed the size with my bike pants and boots on, sewed a bit of velcro in the top at the hip on either side. The pants I ordered XXL so that there would be overlap, with the back part tucked under the front so rain doesn't pour in.

Then after the velcro, I put in popper buttons down along each leg to close the cuts I'd made. With the overlap from the large size, there's a good 3 inches or more overlap, so not one drop of rain got in when I was riding in a downpour yesterday.

These beauts take about 30 seconds to put on. Standing up, with your boots on. :thumbup1:

And when the pants wear out down the line, I buy another cheap pair, and I've already got the plastic popper button thingy, so can replace them out for 10 bucks or so. I'm chuffed with them. Pics down below, if they're any use to anyone.

Happy rain riding folks!

:rain: :scooter:

Cheers Pinball! The bodge job rain pants are actually holding up a treat. Been through a few heavy enough rain rides and not a drop has come through the sides to my pants, so all is good, but cheers for the input!

Ok, I couldn't resist. I ordered the XL and they're only $40.50 delivered to New Mexico. I had a pair of old rain bibs fail on a Dalton highway ride this summer on a really cold, windy, heavy rain ride. I don't ever want to go through something like that again. Tomorrow I'll hit the local REI to get theirs, which I rejected once before because I thought I had these really tough rain bibs I used to use in Alaska for hunting. I'll carry both these British pants and the REI from now on.

One backer bought it and it he uses it for motorcycle ride but we don't have official lab confirmation for that extreme conditions. The material itself is not a problem because it can stand much more but side-zippers are a weak spot when going 100+ km/h."

Could they just trying to be safe? Or could the zippers really be that weak?

I would not stress too much on rain pants. The real answer is simply doing more rain riding.

Over time/ miles you'll get better dealing with rain riding and learn how to arrange your gear for the best result, hopefully can stay reasonably dry.

Hard to do if riding day after day in heavy rain. Sometimes taking a break from the road is best solution. Let things dry out a bit ???

Biggest challenge for me is keeping face shield clear, not fogged up. Lots of little tricks that can help on this.

Seems wet crotch syndrome is common issue with many rain gear outfits.
