Powdered Red Wine...

Everyone likes a civilized glass of wine with their meal.

And why should being on the road rob you of this simple pleasure?

I fancy the "mullet wine" on the same page. Does it taste of fish or make your hair grow funny?

My question exactly!

Anyway - in the interest of science and my fellow travellers, I am on a mission to get some and try it.

What a wonderful invention... it has to be worth a try I guess... can't find anywhere to buy it though... any ideas?

Alcohol powder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martynbiker 1 Feb 2008 15:08

ah yes, but.... as I was saying.....

In Germany a product called Subyou alcopop powder based on imported raw alcohol powder from the US.[2] reportedly was or is distributed on the internet. The product was available in four flavours and packed in 65 gram or possibly 100 gram sachets. When mixed with 0,25 litres of water it gives a drink with 4.8 % alcohol.

Right, Thanks ChrisJ86, I WAS partly right, to stop the Alcohol evaporating they have to mix it with the cyclodextines, all well and good. but, it still doesn t stop the other problem does it? the problem of strength? if 0.25 litre or 250 ml of water is mixed with the packet, you get a drink, ( approx half a pint) of 4,8% alcohol, thats equal to a pretty good Beer. half the water and you double the strength to 9.6% thats Carlsberg Special Brew territory......

Now further on in the Wikipaedia it says that these drinks are marketed at the "Youth" Market...... what Teen ever follows the instructions? I can only see trouble 'brewing' here........what started life as a good idea (Campers, climbers, adventures etc) seems to have been turned to the teen market once again.... is that because they have more disposable income?

They had this on Jonathon Ross's chat show last night, and I doubt it tastes that good, given that the man will usually shove anything in his face, and just puckered up at a mere sniff of it.

Dehydrated water

Just a packet of this dehydrated wine and mix it with the packet of dehydrated water and Viola. I wonder if you get a dehydrated hangover?

Brian E 3 Feb 2008 02:03

I think i'd prefer to carry a half bottle of wine and use it as a treat.

Flyingdoctor 3 Feb 2008 16:48

How much powder can I add to my Special brew before it won't come out of the can. We need exact measurements!

I,m sure toratech have this stuff for sale. There must be someone out there whos tried it or maybe its poison. I find a box of wine minus the box is easy to transport 3 litres of the lovely stuff and the empty bag makes a great pillow or floatation device.

hi alex, it would be fun to see what the average breton thought of this stuff? lol.....

why carry the stuff around? if you are somewhere in the world you cant find some reasonable local wine or hooch then;
a/ the locals dont, so you shouldnt either
b/ youre in a harsh place and getting pissed isnt a good idea
c/ whats the point of going places like a and b?

mattcbf600 19 Mar 2008 13:38

Okay - I managed to get hold of some of this stuff from Touratech (took a mere three weeks to deliver)....

The Wine Fairy

I'd prefer to rely on the 'wine fairy'. :)

Staying in a campsite in Slovenia a couple of years ago I was enduring several days of heavy rain in a leaking tent. One damp morning I got up feeling pretty cheesed off, opened my tent and there was a bottle red wine and a note: "Greetings from the wine fairy. Enjoy your travels!"

No idea who it was from, it cheered me up no end! Have meant to do it in similar conditions for someone else ever since. No doubt the opportunity will arise one day!

Matt :)

You-tube?

If ever there was a test that should have been filmed it was this one. Go, buy more and give us a full audio-visual treat as you and a selected bunch of wine ponces, sorry friends, give it a try.

Who knows perhaps like crotch-rot, it'll grow on you?

Seriously did consider filming it.... but being sick on camera is not something that I want to do again!

Might make a 5 min funny though....

Namaqua Wines

Youre gonna need to carry the water for the powdered wine anyway, so maybe look at one of these

http://www.raisinsocial.net/brands/namaqua/

5l of wine ready mixed in water complete in a flexible bag.
Even makes a good pillow full or empty.

Plus on the bright side it actually is good drinking. In Africa known as a five-man-can. because on a good night, five men can!

cheers G

There are only two ways it could go wrong with the teenagers.

Big party, mixed it with too much water and get a piss weak piss tasting drink.

Or straight from the bag to the mouth and instant drunkness and hangover and maybe dehydration...

PocketHead 8 Jul 2008 03:13

what happens when you eat it without any water

mattcbf600 8 Jul 2008 08:12

The alcohol in the crystals require water to dissolve - I'm not sure if it would break down in saliva / stomach acids in the right way to release the booze - so I suspect what would happen is that you'd be sick very quickly - the stuff is hideous watered down I can't imagine what it's like neat!

oldbmw 8 Jul 2008 13:46

Our local supermarket (Intermarche) does a limited range of wines in 6 packs of 6x25cl screw top bottles for 6 euros. They are perfectly satisfactory and the same wine sold on the ferry is more expensive per litre sold as a 75cl full bottle..

teflon 8 Jul 2008 20:22

How long before some enterprising bugger tries it straight up the nose...?

DAVSATO 23 Jul 2008 23:10

they do the stuff in my local 'cotswold camping' if anyones interested, its part of that wayfarer range of MREs i think. their food is generally palatable if expensive so i dont know why they thought this crap was a good idea

Tut, Tut, Tut

All you uncivilised types hacking round the world on too few wheels :mchappy:

The contents of ThreeWheelBonnies top box:

Gin, Dutch, 0.75L
Tonic, Canned. 4 x 0.25L
Cocktail shaker filled with cocktail sticks
Cherries, Glace, 1 jar
Olives, green, stuffed, one jar
Vodka, Polish, 25cl
Curacoa, 25cl (for guests only, that not only looks like brake fluid.....)
Brandy, cheap, 0,75L
Cointreaa, 2x 25cl (so you can make, of course, a Sidecar :thumbup1:)
Brown sugar, 3 packets, stolen from hotels
Limes, fresh, 2

The wine lives in the nose of the chair where I calculate the temperature to be superior. The glasses (wine & highball of course) go whereever they are easy to get at should the cocktail hour approach quicker than expected.

You'll be telling me next you don't have a proper tea pot with you :(

blimey, its "pimms o'clock" when you turn up mate!

38thfoot 18 Aug 2008 11:31

I don't know where they came from but I did once have some sachets of vodka and whiskey, similar to those usually found containing tomato ketchup.

I thought that they were brilliant but have never seen them since.

grizzly7 19 Aug 2008 06:16

i'd agree it tastes disgusting, but i struggled to get it all to dissolve. the residue is a bit like silicone sealant but doesnt really set, ie really tacky.
so maybe they would have more repeat sales if also sold as contact adhesive?
instantly nore appealling to the overlander looking for multifuctionality wise, not sure how long the lumpy bits would stay in your stomach for!!

biggles0449 25 Sep 2008 12:07

sachets and teapots!

hahaha love the pimms o clock effort! back when i used to wear green alot, a bone china set used to come out in the field, for afternoon tea ;) Definitely going to fly the flag next trip away...pimms or gin?!

as for the sachets of booze, on our flights out to africa, we often get given them instead of miniatures..great space savers, but i fear they might be easier to damage and lose the lovely liquid contained within.

Alexlebrit 25 Sep 2008 13:12

They have the little sachets of spirits on Ryanair flights too, but because you're not allowed anything remotely pointy on the lane watch out or you could end up like my last visitor stinking of gin when you get off the plane.

Never worry about running out of fuel again!

Buy my sachets of powdered petrol. Just add water. One sachet makes 2 US gal.

Only special people can see them though.

For a life-time supply, please send $100 in unmarked notes to

If it's anything like the wine I'll stick to Albanian generator fuel mixed with the contents of the bottle that lives inside my tent :crying::tongue_smilie::nuke:

From a marketing point of view I hope you'll soon be doing the full overland version? This will be supplied in a drawn titanium packet held in a photon torpedo cut aluminium bracket, will cost $10,000 and will be delivered shortly after hell freezes over.

Boy, that was cynical. Must be the can of lager I had last night. Present from a neighbour. To quote Monty Python it was like sex in canoe (but with more chemicals). :helpsmilie:

we just got 50ltrs of meths in for a cleaning job, not the denatured purple pee, the full fat clear stuff that wino's used to drink before white lightning came along.

for a laugh, like lads do, we had a wee dram and its an acquired taste but not too bad, tasting slightly of strawberries believe it or not. put it this way, its better than some german schnapps i refuse to drink and use to clean the windows with!
i pinched some for my trangia, so have i saved space and weight by carrying a dual purpose fluid? well not really, industrial meths is 95% alcohol and the stories about going blind from alcohol poisoning are perfectly true so maybe not.
wonder what its like as a mixer though, perhaps a dash with some fruit juice? or an alternative bloody mary, perhaps a flippin' mary?

Be very careful with the Meths, its Methanol/ethanol mix, you would need to distil it to separate them and their boiling points are very close together, I used to work with pure Ethanol, plenty of cola and ice :thumbup1:
Then the man from HM customs arrived to inspect the store and was not amused when I mentioned the party:oops2:

Powdered wine - what an insane idea.

What's wrong with sampling the local wines wherever you go? It's one of the pleasures of travelling. In some places it's one of the highlights...

And in those countries where alcohol is not available or permitted, a few days of abstinence won't kill you.
