Electronic/Product Design Engineers.........?

Hey folks!

Ok this is a long shot, but anyway.

Anyone on here have any experience with product design, specifically an electronic device, and bringing a product from concept to production?

I have this idea for a camping security device, had it for about 9 years now, since the night wild camping solo in Alaska when I woke up in my tent with a black bear standing on my head. Well specifically standing on my face.
Never woke up so fast in my life. Fun times.

Anyway, so I have an idea for a camping security device, and I think it's pretty damn good, and would sell. I do a fair bit of solo riding and wild camping, and on my travels I've had a few hairy experiences camped out solo in the middle of nowhere. It's the experiences that I missed though, where I was fast asleep and unaware that would probably trouble me more. This concept I have would change that.
I know I would buy this thing if it was on the market, and still nobodys brought out anything like it, which surprises me. And I do believe there would be a market for it, for bikers, hikers, kids camping out, etc.

But, honestly, personally, I'm not going to bring this to fruition solo. Should have posted about this on here 9 years ago, as the design was fully developed back then, and it would probably be on the market by now, if I met the right person to help me get it moving.

So, anyone with the right background and experience that would be interested in talking more??

Mail me.

What a pity you didn't post this four or five months back. My nephew is an industrial design student and back after Xmas was looking for an idea for his final year project. His second year project was a medical device that has now gone into production.

We had long discussions about whether there were any bike related or camping ideas I had that he could pick up on but nothing came to mind. In the end he designed a range of modular gardening things.

He's off travelling shortly so I won't be seeing him for a while now.

There are a number of things that could be helpful for travellers...

Such as a device that hangs on the back of a door - detects;
door movement
movement inside the room
smoke
heat

Each detection should have a selectable response;
light
alarm
alarm + light

------------------
Having some form of detection for a tent is going to pose problems.

Ha, typical! Well, I should have posted on here about 9 years ago, but anyway.

Cheers though, hopefully somebody comes along that can help me move this along. Ye'll all be using this thing I swear haha! :thumbup1:

Therein lies the beauty of this thing. Watch this space, down the line hopefully you'll be hearing more about it.

You want the local technical college or University Faculty of Engineering. They have facilities, knowledge, access to funds and are looking for real experiences for their students. If you make millions you will be expected to share, but at the first stage they'll be thinking technology not the business case.

Its how 25 years ago I spent a year looking at false finger nails for guitar players. The noise of the test rig still haunts me!

The business case will be covered by a legal agreement .. and that will be signed before you start talking technology. You'll want a lawyer before you sign anything to ensure your rights and confidentiality are protected. If they don't raise this legal agreement then you should.

Hey Warin, Andy, cheers for the input.

I'm actually back in college myself right now, doing electrical engineering, but this would be electronic and manufacturing engineering. I approached a lecturer that I thought would have been interested and he told me he would give me all the help and support I need.

But I'd be doing it myself. I've not a bulls notion of how to go about it. To be honest the money wouldn't even bother me. I'd rather hand it over to someone that could actually successfully do it, and bring it to fruition. If I got a wee few quid towards a bike trip, and a few free finished products, I'd be happy out with that.

I'm sure I'll come across someone can take the idea and run with it. Hope to be telling ye all about it down the line!

Mick
