Coleman 533 Sportster Stove
 

Hello,

I've just bought one of these but not sure if its faulty or not, so wanted to check with you folk before I fill it with fuel. The instructions talk about opening and closing the pump but on mine it turns in both directions with no positive feeling of being open or closed and it can be pulled out regardless of its position. Is this right??

Also, stupid question maybe but if you don't use up all the fuel in the stove, is it safe to transport with fuel inside, or do you have to empty it out??

Apologies if I'm being stupid, I blame it on my mixing of the grape and the grain last night....(my heads still throbbing!!)

It should spin freely if not pushed down in place.

1. First put the fuel in.
2. Then get some air in there. You only need your thumb for this. Put your thumb over the little pin-***** hole at the top of the pump lever and start pumping.
3. You will feel the pressure building up.
4. Once compressed (strong resistance) take your thumb off the end and push the pump lever into position. The pump has a non-return valve so it wont suddently deflate. The opening and closing of the pump is only for releasing and storing the lever.
5. Rotate the head of the pump lever clockwise to clock in place.
6. To ignite turn little red lever and light when you hear hissing noise.
7. It will go Woof and burn yellow for a few secionds before the fuel in the tube heats up and then it should start burning blue. It it doesn't then there is too little pressure in the cylinder or the tap is not open enough.
8. Go look in mirror and comb smouldered eye-brows

You can travel with it full up without troubles.
If it ever clogs up just treat it with some good old carb cleaner (I've used my for two years now without needing to do this)

(Since when is the use of ***** in pin-***** a swear word and need to be sensored) :)

Thanks Bossies - thats exactly the info I needed. Maybe you should have written Colemans lighting instructions for them! From your description of the pump lever it sounds as though mine is ok. I'm looking forward to getting a brew going on it.

On the subject of 533's. My newly acquired one has a very stiff (red) control lever. It works but I'm worried it's going to bend at some point. Every one I've ever fiddled with in a shop turns easily.

Does anyone else have a stiff one? :confused1: Will it loosen off with use?:eek3:

I've also got a stiffy, after 2 years it hasn't gone slack. Prefer it that way as it gives a more positive resistance.

Try loosening the nut on the lever a little. If during use a small flame appears there you will need to re-tighten it a bit.
