Wunderlich Hexa T wheel hub cover
 

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has a wunderlich hexa t wheel hub cover, like the one shown in this link...

Basically I've got a puncture on my rear tyre, but can't get this cover off to access the 4 bolts underneath. I've emailed Wunderlich in Germany and they sent me the instruction sheet but since I didn't install it originally I'm not sure re. getting it off again.

If anyone has got one on their bike or used to, I'd appreciate any thoughts and comments. :)

Well, if it covers the 4 wheel retaining nuts behind it, I think it is one of the pop on, pop off covers, no?
Doesn't it just turn freely on the hub axis?

Can you not ease a flat head screw driver under its rim and prise it off gently?

It can't be bolted on, as there is not thread on the hub, IIRR from my old R1150GS. I just think it is pushed or tapped on for installation, so prising/pulling off should be good for removal.

That's where the instructions are a bit ambiguous, but its last point says 'Tighten assembly' ("Hand tight") which would infer it's a screw on type thing, but you may be right.

I shoved in some oil and WD40 last night anyway, so here's hoping. :)

Does it turn if you rotate it in your hand?

If not, you can go one of two ways:
Buy one of those oil filter wrenches that is like metal strip that wraps around the filter, tightening as you turn it anticlockwise until the thread loosens
or
get a plumber's wrench whose jaws can be set to different diameters and use that.

Either way, you may mark the rather pricey GSA add-on.... be warned.

Once off, sell it!!!

No, sadly not, there's no rotation at all - it's stuck solid. I did try one of those one filter wrenches but there's not enough width for it to grip onto really, so it slid off when some pressure was applied.

At the moment I wouldn't care if the addon was ruined, as long as I can get the bike back. I've got a feeling that eventually I'll have to drill it out, but we'll see.

The hole you can see in photo 1 isn't a screw or anything, it's just a hole they put in there so you could tighten it (so it couldn't be undone again) ;)

Looking at the picture below, there is nowhere for the cover to be threaded on. It must be stiction, or that it is a tight fit, it may just be off set, and so sticking.

Hhmmm, sounds about right. I'm taking it to a specialist tyre centre tomorrow, so hopefully they'll be able to get it off.

There is a hole that runs through the hub in that picture. Does it reach the other side of the final drive? I can't remember. I know it does on the 1200.

If it does, you could use a rod or drift and see if gentle taping with a hammer can get a bit of movement. You may be able to tap it out.

Yah, I'm afraid you're right - it goes down an inch or so then stops. It's a tailor made system for tightening it too much.

You may not be surprised to hear that it's been discontinued, at least in this incarnation.

Well, a mechanic finally managed to get the cover off using a 4ft adjustable wrench, so probably not something you'd have hanging around at home. :)

All told, with the puncture repaired, it came in at £48 so a good result I'd say.
