Speedometer, odometer and clock stopped working

Can anyone shed some light on this?

2007 F650GS Single

My digital odometer and clock display aren't showing up anymore. Also, both the tach and speedometer are basically staying at my last maximum rpm/speed. When I turn the key all the usual lights come on and the bike starts normally, minus the clock and odometer.

This happened once and then it just all clicked back on after I fiddled around with the fuses. The odometer was showing the extra kilometres from the time it conked out, so I assume that it's working but just not displaying. Then it conked out again during a ride. It came back on once again after fiddling with the fuses and then went back off after a few seconds.

I've checked all fuses for continuity; checked the battery and terminals; disconnected and reconnected the battery in an attempt to "reset" everything; I've cleaned the rear ABS sensor and don't know what else to check.

Anyone with any advice on how to proceed besides a visit to my friendly Bring My Wallet dealer?

Thanks

Have you got access to an ossciloscope?

If so, you should try to connect that to the speed signal input line at the display, then spin the wheel driving it to see if there is a signal. I'd expect a square wave of nice even shape, and a couple of volts at best (if its anything like my BMW car ABS sensor system).

If that's there, then I'd suggest substitution of a known good part - from a breaker perhaps.

Thanks for the reply Dave. Unfortunately I don't have access to an oscilloscope. I may end up having to take it in to the dealer since I've got a little trip coming up this weekend.

Knowing of two others who very recently had similar problems with the same bike and a G650, it sounds like a broken or loose electrical wire - both in the ignition lock area. Both were fixed with a bit of re-soldering and their journeys continued.

The other very regular cause of unusual electrical problems on F650s is battery terminals. Check the contacts are clean and are really tight.

You could try asking on a bike specific forum such as www.f650.co.uk There are a lot of knowledgeable guys there.

Sounds very much like the issue I have on my R1200GS, the wheel speed sensor at the rear wheel stopped working. The result was that my speedo, odometer and ABS don't work. :(

On the 1200GS the speed sensor is located in the final drive and can be traced via the black wire. I don't know what it's like on the 650GS, I don't know if you even have the same sensor setup, probably not given it's chain drive... might be worth double checking if you have access to a diagnostic unit.

BTW if if helps anyone (else) I have a wheel speed sensor for any 1200 model up to 08/06 for sale.

Problem Solved!

OK, the problem has been solved. It turns out that the instrument panel was on the fritz. A friend happened to have a used one lying around. I plugged it in and voila it's all back up and working.

On the downside, my bike now shows 6300 more km's than it should since this is stored inside the panel and now reflects his old bike's km's.

If anyone has any ideas on how to "roll back" the odometer I'd appreciate any assistance. I'm aware of the legal aspects of rolling back an odometer :nono: but I also don't want to be stuck with trying to sell a bike that shows more km's than it actually has.

Never Mind

Never mind the previous question. My dealer tells me that if I bring in both panels they'll be able to certify the correct km's for my records. That way I'll be OK for resale if and when it comes.
