Racks above the airheads

Once I saw small racks (app. 30x20cm) on both sides about 10cm above the airheads of a R 80 or 100. Unfortunately I had no chance to ask where to get them.

Could someone help me?

We just used 13mm round, bent to form a rectangle, two cross bars, two support tabs (19mm x 3mm) to use an exhaust clamp onto the crash bars, then a piece of flat bar that goes from the footpeg bolt the rack. Then plas dipped.

If you make up a wooden template first you can get all the angles sorted out before you start welding and bending. You need to have a reasonable gap between the rack and the head to get at the spark plugs. You can even give wooden templates for welders to work from.

I have a pair hanging up in my shed made for an R65 1985. I don't think that they fit later models as position of pegs/crash bar have changed so taking measurements wont help.

Most (airhead) people make there own.

Rather than use the foot pegs I simply clamped to the frame, and to the crash bar.

These days you can use T bolt clamps - this gives you a nut/bolt to make a simple mounting point. 2 Clamps on the crash bar, one towards the bike centre, the other to the outside of the bike, and the third clamp on the frame - between the carby and cylinder. Managed some 12 kg load per rack.

Notes ... if you happen to bend the crash bar you don't want the rack to damage the engine... make a weak point/s on the crash bar so it can move backwards but does not let the rack move downwards.

The alternative is throw over panniers on the fuel tank. connect the lower front corners together to stop then lifting up at speed.
