Well, I should be in Spain right now enjoying a San Miguel while looking out over the Mediterranean in 60 degree temps. As fate would have it a wonderful snowstorm nailed the east and canceling my connection and basically my trip. So, I am still stuck in Maine but the bike can continue being worked on while enjoying local craft beer and sub freezing temps. :helpsmilie::freezing:

So it continues, sorry no photos today

2/1/11 update

I contacted the powder coater today and told him I'm around due to the cancelled trip and that he can step up the pace if he wants.

Went to the shed today to look at those relay connectors. Yup...2 are different in regards to mounting. I may first try to bend the tab vertical from horizontal and if this is not possible then just switch out the connector. Weird they are different.

About 1:30 during the snowstorm I got a call from the wife and said the car lost power and died 4 miles from home. Great says I as I grab a rope and the jeep. Get there and see the problem. The water pump bearings gave up the ghost seizing the pump and wetting itself while toasting the serpentine belt thus bogging and stalling the car on a hill in a snowstorm. So I rig up the rope, tow her home. Verify my prognosis with the Bentley manual and the idiotweb. Verified

Spent most of the afternoon in the snow with now fading light ripping the old one out. I was right it was toast. Ordered a new one from Bav auto.

Oh did I mention that it too is a BMW, a 328i and I did all this with the on board tool kit

2/2/11 update

I heard the little furry bastard in PA did not see his shadow. Then again there are three snowstorms forecasted so not sure who is right

Currently snowing here today, 14-20 forecasted. I was able to get the mail and I had a box from Canada with my Omega 450 system in it

That thing is a work of art.

Not going to need these, may ask Rick at motorrad if he wants to trade towards a coil
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0534.JPG

Spent the day soldering....damn I suck at that. :lol3 Eventually got a solid three connections that didn't look like crap and were solid. I may have to recover that first wire though there is no chance of it shorted.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0524.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0527.JPG

The kit came with a housing so was able to keep mine in mostly one piece.

Along with the kit I also got part of another Canadian box I'm expecting. Stainless Steel spokes for the wheel. I may end up just selling these as I don't think I will use them.

Eventually I made it down to the shed, got a bit of cabin fever. Used the fancy rotor bolt and popped the rotor clear off. Then removed the timing cover and replaced the chain, tensioner and spring. Yes I make it sound easy....but it was not. That damn master link is a royal PITA to install. Sometimes working on this bike I feel like a surgeon. Today placed rags in the oil holes while maneuvering the master link with forceps. Meanwhile I was keeping the plunger at bay with needle nose vise grips. Ugh

I did notice that the new spring was about 1/2" longer and that the tensioner was beginning to chip apart. Probably about time it gets replaced. There was some play on the old chain, but not too much.

Before you ask, those specs you see on the metal are not specs of dust, but frost.....:freezing:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0547.JPG

The oil seal on the timing cover was pretty well bonded to the cover. I had to use a drift to force it out and it left plastic behind that I had to remove with a torch and brass feeler gauge. Worst seal yet.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0546.JPG

Also, I found out about a great source of wiring stuff. Beaver power at Motorcycle Relay Kits, Parts, Powerlet, Centech, Posi-Lock, and More! I will be getting a few things from them to make life good on the bike

2/3/11 update:

Added photos to 2/2/11 update

Well I heard back from the supposed first owner. He is indeed the first owner. He bought it in MT while living in Idaho. On the way back he experienced a major earthquake and the bike survived fine, though the rest of the trip back was spend riding around earthquake debris. He rode it one year for 12 months in Idaho through snow and ice. During his ownership he did use it for which it was designed, dirt roads and exploring. He said that out of the 12 BMWs he has owned, this one is the one he liked the best. He'll be sending me a photo of it when new at some point in the near future.

Heard from the powder coater too, Just under $400 for everything....Spectacular guy. Remember Powderworks in Bangor Maine if you ever need anything done.

Since this was done, I decided to order my bucket of bolts list to attach everything. How a bucket of damn bolts can cost that much is beyond me, but if your going to do a job you had might as well do it right.

Went to the shed to break the trail, get some photos and ensure I did the timing chain install right. The trail you see has actually never been shoveled. It is packed after every storm. If I stepp off of the trail, I am thigh deep...I am 6'2"
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0548.JPG

The yurt photo; If you notice the twigs sticking out....that is to mark the trail after a storm to ensure I don't end up to my ass in snow.

2/4/11 update

Found out today that my points can that was shipped from CA on the 24th was sent priority mail and should have been here 4 days ago. Seems that it is probably lost unfortunately.

If so and as this is my second attempt at getting a points can I am going to look at it as the airgods are against me installing points on this bike. If it does not show up by the time I go to install the electrics, I will stay with the HALL sensor and someday gets Rick's Alpha system.

Points are nice, but I do not mess with the will of the airgods

2/5/11 update;

The airgods accepted my sacrifice of dinojuice and sage as an offering last night

This showed up in the mail within a tattered box. Seems it had gotten lost as it was mislabeled.

Sorry, no gloves only some mildly dirty hands and a fumes induced video before I left

So, here is a photo of the 40 SS spokes that go to the front R100gs wheel. Any reason why I should hold onto them? I can't relace a wheel. Do I need them?

Just read your buildup thread, great way to go.

In the early 1980s I was lucky enough to modify a 1979 R65 to an 800cc using the pistons and barrels out of a 90S, the piston skirts needed a quick skim of about 3mm or was it 13mm (cant remember). Fantastic torque, the tyres would lose grip before the engine ever lost power on dirt tracks or in snow or mud - my wife was often needed to provide the weight for extra grip!!. Swapped the swingarm for a /7 which was about 50mm longer and tilted the engine up at the front to accomodate the longer rear suspension travel. Had to fit a new clutch after the first outing as I managed to rip the centre out of the old one.

Other mods included long travel front forks - I think they were Marzocchis with air pumps, 21" front wheel laced onto the original single disk hub with Brembo caliper, Konis on the back end with longer travel, a 32 litre long range fuel tank - managed to do the Birdsville Track without a refuel, a /7 seat which was renowned as being the most comfortable seat that BMW ever produced. Pot racks for extra carrying capacity - 6 tin esky, standard Krauser panniers and racks except for a cross brace at the rear to stop the frames cracking.

The Raven 7 Feb 2011 22:04

That's what's great about these old bikes. Simple and easy to mod. The Airhead is the ultimate swiss army bike :thumbup1:

Got a call from Works today. Turns out the shock had some MAJOR miles on it and needed a complete rebuild. No biggy though, glad to find out now than when I'm loaded in east woop woop and the shock blows. I had to forgo the longer hose with a 90 at the end to save the additional $80.

I also got my powdercoat today. Overall very good. A couple issues like my VIN getting slightly covered and a few flanges getting covered. Nothing a little patience and a Dremel won't take care of. I heard a certain chemical works too. Might get some aircraft stripper or gasket remover and see how it works.

I also went ahead and started stripping the detail lines off too. Found a sanding flapper bit works perfect

The Raven 8 Feb 2011 21:49

2/8/11 No photos, sorry

Got my front r100gs wheel and lock plate in the mail today.....BUT NOT MY REAR RACK, WTF!!! I have never had such a hard time buying from someone in my entire life. I'm giving the guy 48 hours to respond. If I have to take it as far as Paypal/CC dispute I will let everyone know who he is and to avoid him at all cost. He's not on HUBB, but owns a motorcycle shop near Toronto.

I started the work in the shed with putting the drive shaft back together. The shaft had VERY little wear on the cogs and the spring was good and tight so figured it was a waste to replace it.

I made one mistake; I left some screws in the holes on the frame...stupid me now the ones that are left are coated and the other are history Guess it's time for a trip to hardware store and a supply of common metrics.

I mounted some of the harness. This includes the fusebox, and the relay boxes. The ICU got put into the spares box as I am installing the points bean can. I was going to reuse Ricks VR that I installed on the old system, but the one that came with the Omega is a bit bigger so went with that one.

Made a deal with Wirespokes. Trading my stainless R100GS wirespokes to him for a correction to my Euro r80GS speedo and a correct mileage of 55500mi. I figure it's worth it to me and saves some coin. This was not a priority to me, but things worked out.

Well that's it for today...I'm sick as hell right now...Should not be doing anything but sleeping. Bethany keeps me coming to the shed though as she's such a temptation.....

The Raven 10 Feb 2011 14:42

2/9/11 update

I've been sick with the flu lately so by rights I should take a break and not tromp down to the shed and reassemble a motorcycle in sub-freezing temps...then again I'm determined so that's what I did.

I bought some aircraft remover today to strip the PC off of a few areas that didn't need PC like inside the shifter shaft and linkage ball. Worked well. The PC was also used too heavily over my VIN making it almost unreadable. I may tape it off and strip the PC off of the VIN and just apply regular paint. As the AS works so well I will probably strip my fork legs of the yellow and PC them white.

I assembled the levers today as well....oddly I misplaced a pile of M4 and M5 screws and bolts Really stupid, but i guess I'll just replace them with allen bolts

As listed below, or above depending on your layout, I IDed the deadbeat seller who shorted me my rack.

Still waiting on my reassembly hardware from MAX. Apparently some stuff was BO.

Still no photos...sorry

The Raven 10 Feb 2011 14:43

2/13/02 update

No, you didn't miss a day update...I kind of lost a day...not much of a memory of yesterday. I hate the flu.

Pretty all that happened yesterday is I hiked to the shed and grabbed the timing cover to drop in my parents basement to bring it up to temp to paint. Figure it'll be covered by the PD engine cover and skid plate so it really only needs basic paint. I ended up using Rustolium professional gloss black to paint it today. Not a concorse finish, but not a concorse bike either.

Today I was lucky enough to score a RTP switch housing on Ebay for my aux lights and Heated grip switches. Still need the switch but that's easy to find. Thanks to Beemerguru for the idea

2/14/11 update

Well after not doing crap for a week as I was sick I finally recovered enough to take advantage of the 40F+ temps and do some serious ass hauling in the shed.

I mentioned painting the timing cover. Not the best paint job, but works for something that will be covered. I went and took my trusty heat gun and installed the new seal and installed the cover...including the couple upper mounts.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0595.JPG
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0596.JPG
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0597.JPG

Then came the wiring. I followed a couple directions here. One was adding the two additional ground wires. Not necessarily needed with the solid mount G/S, but also I can't believe would hurt. Not shown in photos is the sanding I did on the mounts to expose more bare metal. All the wires were pretty self explanatory
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0598.JPG
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0601.JPG

The old working system;
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0602.JPG

Static timing the points can. I set it so the continuity broke a knife edge beyond S. Is this correct?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0605.JPG

And now in the frame with only one ding in the powdercoat...:cry
It was a BITCH to install.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0607.JPG

Next were the crashbars, complete with the fancy new..err preowned kickstand
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0609.JPG
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0610.JPG

Once all that was done I figured I could install the tail end starting with the trans. I mix up a 50/50 with super tack and moly and paint the splines. Sticks real good
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0611.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0612.JPG

NOT SO FAST!!! Turns out Max still hasn't sent the box'O'Bolts so I can't install anything back there till I get the neutral switch harness. I do need one too. The old one was sacrificed as an ignition trigger wire.

So I went ahead and mounted the forks....did I mention I needed to replace the lower bearings and remove the inner race.....not fun ended up cutting it off. Greased both with the red and tacky.

Need to do some research to figure out EXACTLY how the Pod will fit on these forks. The mounts are different

The Raven 15 Feb 2011 21:36

2/15/11

No photos....I had my hands full

Reassembled the swingarm to the FD. Turns out the PC guy coated the matching surface so I had to strip that down. Although not needed I put a smear of gasket goo on the surfaces, blue loctite on the bolt threads and torqued it down.

Because of all the discussion a while back about neutral switches leaking I hit mine preemptively with West Systems 2 part epoxy, coated it real good.

Messed around with the pod housing and put it on. Also put the handlebars on....dumb ass idea as within 10 minutes I had hit my head good enough to see stars and draw blood I may be pulling them till I have to work on them again.

The rest of the day was spent cursing at my Canadian friend who sent me a r100gs wheel that must have spent the last 5 years buried in a stockyard. Black dust? Seriously? I'm getting it clean, but my fingers are bleeding doing so

Well off to clean my wounds and have some barley therapy......beer

RogerM 15 Feb 2011 23:51

There were duff handlebars fitted to early R80GS models - they had an oblong hole machined in between the saddle clamps for the handlebar wiring to pass through. There was a recall on the handlebars, but just check you have the correct bars as they were prone to breaking in half after a few hours riding on a corrugated road.

You've got to hunt down a Heinrich 42 litre long range tank!! Looks so much more macho than that piddly 16litre!!! Plus you can deliver fuel to remote places.

The Raven 16 Feb 2011 02:47

Good to know on the bars. I was thinking about drilling mine but won't now knowing this. I've passed up a couple of the Heinrich tanks...BLAH are they fugly. I'll get an HPN or PD tank at some point. That is if I can find one reasonable

Installed the braided fuel line today. Then went ahead and put scotchbrite pads on either side of the oil breather like Infra per solo's suggestion to him.....What benefit does this have? Will it make a mess? Solo? I'm guessing that by MILDLY restricting pressure the oil will not just simply flow out of the breather and into the box. The scotch brite pads prevent other stuff from entering.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0648.JPG

I also installed the clutch actuator. Because I didn't see any reason NOT to I brushed my moly/red tacky goop lightly on all sliding surfaces.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0655.JPG

Installed the airbox cover with the BMW recommended holes at the end of the horn. Put in the battery box and also battery temporarily.

I went ahead and got a set of r100gs side covers

I also sent in an order to Rick at ME for the green coil, condensor, brushes and springs. He's taking my solid mounts back for a credit...good guy :D

At the moment I am pretty much at another standstill. My SS brake actuator is still enroute from england and it's kind of necessary to have it installed to then install the monolever. I would like to work on the front but need to put in an order for the remainder of the fork signal parts.

So:
Need to order Hotgrips
4 more wish lists with MAX
1 supply run to marine supply for electrical parts.
Get the tire switched over to the r100GS rim...nearly impossible to do in the winter myself as the rubber is too hard.
Need a K-R11?? left brake caliper and hose to mount brakes.
Plus ????

Damn I got a long way to go

Took the G/S wheel off of the forks today. I'll drop the wheels off this week to get them changed over.

Decided after careful thought that I might as well reinstall the stock dripper system back into the bike. I did this for a couple reasons...
1. I have enough drips coming from this bike as it is....I don't need another coming from a hose
2. I don't like having free oil coming around as it attracts dust and dirt therefore creating a mess.
3. I don't want to deal with a catch tank as I don't need the smell of burnt oil
4. The stock system has worked now for 55k miles, the carbs were not all oily and honestly why mess with a working system?

I also did a quick alignment of the r100 seat with the G/S tank....yes it does fit but the gap is absolutely crappy. I may use the G/S subframe until I can find a GS tank.

I got a caliper off of a r1100r to replace the 2 pot on the r100gs forks.I need to machine a bit off but the added braking should be nice :thumbup1:

I removed mine. I blanked one side of the "T" and ran a silicone tube from the other side, down through the hole in the airbox, (for the, removed, air system). I used a wiring grommet to get a snug fit to the tube and ran the tube down below the motor and anchored it there.

Just another option:biggrin3:

Just be aware that if you stall in water, the breather tube can easily suck water up into the engine.

From what I understand that is if the valve is not working as it should.

Following the rebuild

Hi Adam,

Even though I have no experience rebuilding a R80 or the like just thought I'd drop in on your thread and say "Hey, looks good." :thumbup1:

Keep posting and I'll keep reading, call it moral support in the 3' of snow you have :freezing:

Just a quick update;
Been away for a few days in Ottawa Canada. Great city!!

I ended up getting my brake caliper in the mail while I was away and a friend of mine offered to machine it for me for free to save me from myself :D Took it all apart to save shipping and I'm sending just the part that needs machined.

Still waiting on my shock, brake rod, and Max order. Got some signals off of a different bike but they are very different...I will have to figure something out with them.

Got my tire switched over to the r100gs rim. It turned out to be perfectly true so I got lucky there.

The big news is I found a R100GS tank is great condition. It's in bumblebeemer scheme so I won't have to touch my forks....that will save some coin. I just need a cap and a set of petcocks. This also means that the rear rack will be painted in yellow.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/HPIM2668.JPG
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/HPIM2669.JPG

I got the reconditioned Works shock back today and polished it up. Needed a shaft and all new seals with oil. I'm sure It's nice.....but never feel good about getting something back that looks the same as when it was sent. Kind of like getting a car fixed.....no change except less dough in the bank account.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0718.JPG

I need some input on which dirt skin color to get with the Bumblebeemer scheme?

ATV Shock Covers, UTV Shock Covers, MX Shock Covers, Neoprene Shock Covers, Shock Covers, ATV Shockcovers, UTV Shockcovers, MX Shockcovers, Neoprene Shockcovers, Shockcovers, ATV Shock Cover, UTV Shock Cover, MX Shock Cover, Neoprene Shock Cover, Sho

I ended up going for this fender, the Acerbis Tecnik. I will be hitting the rear section black.

Bike finally got to stand on her own two wheel today and her stands. :thumbup1:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0751.JPG

I went ahead and installed all the switchgear on the bars today. I hope to replace the switches at some point to make them a bit more cleaned up. Didn't make any connections as the bars need to come off to change the fork caps when the arrive.

I also found out that the ST/ G/S rack I got actually fits the rear of the R100GS subframe. I may use it as a aux carrier if I need it for trips.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0753.JPG

Connected the points wire to the coil with the marine grade connectors and 14ga anchor wire. Not much clearance for those screws though....not sure why he didn't make the bracket longer to work for the other hole.

Modified and mounted the center police switch but found that the center stud has a clearance issue. I need bar risers, a smaller nut or need to cut the existing one in half.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0752.JPG

Rick sent me the gen light bypass so I'm thinking about mounting the LED light gauge over the gen light. I can run the wire right into the light hole so no issue with permanent changes.

Mirrors

Hi Adam,

you might like these:thumbup1:

I got that Ram ball mount with the 8mm bolt through it. That replaces the mirror stalk:

Then use a short or medium joint to connect a mirror:

In the event of an off or a crash they will just fold away but are good for ton+, I'm told...

G/S build - looking good!

Coming along nicely! As for indicators, I'm not sure what you are doing at the front. I ended up installing an aluminum guard around the headlight assembly (which is pretty weak) and purchased some F650GS indicators, which have a nice flexible stem so they bend when you crash. I had one bad get off on my G/S before switching to GS forks, and the headlight completely blew up - worth protecting.

As to the engine breather, I tried bypassing that as well, by plugging the end with a little K&N round filter that fit right in the breather hole where it comes into the airbox. the theory being that it will suck up any oil that comes through. Well, I found that to much oil was coming out, and making a mess of the airbox so I reverted back to the stock system. As you say, it works so why mess with it?

Are you going to put on a larger diameter disk up front? Personally I think that makes the most difference to braking power - more then changing the caliper. I have a Rxx11 4 piston rotor ready to go on. Interestingly it has pretty much the same surface area as the stock, dual piston one on the R100GS. which is nice because it doesn't change the size of the master cylinder.

3/8/11

Big day yesterday. I got lots of parts and spent the day installing them. Here are the highlights

Installed the new fork caps and signals. I need a new LH signal as my old one was toast. It seems I also had R100GS signal stalks on there already as the R80GS one I had ordered/replaced since owning the bike and to be modified with a dremel to work.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0767.JPG
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0768.JPG

Installed the handlebars, clutch cable, and authority switch. I figured it easier to cut the center nut down to allow the switch to work. Took a bit of time but worked well.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0773.JPG

Installed the driveshaft bolts, and the #$%! boot. Also replaced the shock nuts.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0772.JPG

Per Beemergurus advice I removed the head plugs and put in a crush plug, ALONG with the red locktite
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0770.JPG

I wasn't quite done with my cards yet either and had a couple things I wanted to replace. Namely the choke springs as they did not want to return to completely closed before the refresh. As well as the jets and needles.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0771.JPG

I eventually got a couple packages one being the Centech panel...NICE PIECE OF HARDWARE, the Barkbuster Storms, rugged SOBs as compared to the Acerbis I had on the KLR and the beautiful tank.

Um.....I got my front fender today, and although I like contraversy.....I HATE THE COLOR. ITS NEON YELLOW. I ordered a completely black one instead.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0781.JPG

In other news, I found a perfect place to mount my Centeh AP1. Right on top of Ricks Volt regulator. Seems the mounting studs are not actually grounding studs and only need to be ground down a bit. Then a piece of heavy duty toll pass quality velcro attached and securely mounted.

I got my hot grips today. Seems nice....but the rubber is well...rubbery. Not sure how well they will last but I will try them out just the same.

In respect of trying to do a job right....I took a look at the schematic and decided it would be cheaper to order from Eastern Beaver and get the wiring I need. I decided that BMW had it right in using the nice small connectors in thier authority switches, so that's what I'm doing. EB sold these
http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...3p110_0261.jpg

I hate paying shipping so went ahead and ordered everything I needed included the aux light harness, even if I will probably add the lights later. I can always install the kit, and zip tie the wires.
http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Pr...uxkit-new1.jpg

As an afterthought I wish I had actually gotten the AP2 fuse panel...as my grips will be going into it. Because of this. I'm switching the entire panel. with the AP1 kit and tapping the factory grey wire that runs from the BMW fuses as my switched lead. This wire is the one I believe Tom going to the brake lights.
http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Pr...lay-kit-18.jpg
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...20colorful.jpg

Because of all the wiring I'm doing, and wishing to do it right and not a bunch of posilock harness tapping moisture inducing hacking I decided to finally invest in a good soldering iron. A $29 Weller 8200 140w. It's a very nice iron that beats the little 25w I have been using for years. It'll also allow me to fix the old harness and pass that along to a willing buyer for a couple bucks
http://www.cooperhandtools.com/_cach...572f1d8120.jpg

The Raven 11 Mar 2011 20:42

I also went ahead and installed the grips. I know they had mentioned using epoxy on the throttle but it was tight. They also mentioned grinding down the throttle tube to make it fit the grip.....um no.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0791.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0792.JPG

Once the grips were installed I went and put on the Barkbuster storms.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_0790.JPG

I went with the barkbuster vacuform plastic to make a cover for the Centech.

Update on the HotGrips.

I got an email back from Hotgrips and they basically said that if the grips don't simply split apart due to fatigue they will fail within a few months due to the internal wire stress. They cannot be stress fitted on the bars....
They also mentioned that I was very lucky as they have also had the grips basically just split and fall apart upon being forced on beyond hand pressure.

Soooo, back to the shed I go. I ended up spending a good hour with the dremel sander and a sharpy marking and grinding the tube down so I could simply slip it on and epoxy it. Eventually it slipped on, and all was good.

I was a bit scared that the wires had already split so did test resistance and also power them up....all good

All good info if you guys ever think about installing Hotgrips on the BMW

Basically summarizes my experience too:

Seems I messed around with my picasa hosting and the photos went up critter creek. Fixed now.

Just a brief update on the G/S.

I eventually got to the point where I could take her for a spin. She ran well higher up, but the lower revs left a lot to be desired. I was also having a bugger of a time starting her. Turns out a few things were happening. My LH cyl had 78lbs compression while my RH had 130. I guessed stuck rings caused by all the warm/freezing cycles ALL winter. A shot of marvels mystery oil quickly addressed that issue . The other issues were carb related on a big scale.
This chart helped a lot..the orange was my issue range;
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...800/carb2.jpeg

1. I had flipped AND mixed up which carb the enricher circuits went on...basically making the chokes only mildly operational.

2. My main needle was in position 2 on one carb, 3 on the other. Only realized using a caliper.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_2309.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_2310.JPG

3. I had replaced the #40 idle jets and it was idling like crap...replaced with #45..fixed. The 40 must have been a symtom fix to deal with crap orings by the PO

4. Installed 2.68 needle jets over the 2.66 jets to richen it up a bit on mid range

5. Pulled the 150 and installed 142s for main jets.

6. My timing was a bit retarded, fixed. I had initially figured static was fine...nope, dynamic is the place to be.

7. My right carb plate is a tad mis-aligned..not really fixable without some work, and some parts....It causes a slightly high idle...but livable.

8. Float needle still leaks on occasion...hoping it's just some crud that needs worked out..new everything so not much else I can do.

9. A sticky idle...again hoping it will sort itself out.

10. Brakes have been a bit of a headache, Still trying to get all the air out...I can't believe how much is in there :eek3: Even with air, the feel and grab is better than stock.

11. Blinker went all pear shaped...turned out to be a toasted resistor...put a physically bigger one in and solved the issue.....i think :innocent:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_2292.JPG

12. Those lights....didn't last long before I broke them...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_x...0/IMG_2168.JPG

Like any airhead though...it is finicky and will always be played with. Not entirely convinced I would be willing to take the bike on a RTW. We do have the KLRs and they run like clockwork. They are also much cheaper to fix and get parts for in a pinch. We are currently updating them with better lights and gear. Taking the best of the KLE500 and the KLR650

Well, unfortunately due to some asshattery after I questioned something I ended up being permanently banned over on ADVrider where I had also posted this buildup I had to pull my photos. Snowmobil - could be fun :)
I drove to Falun this thursday (on my R80/7-RT), ca 200km north of me. About -5'C going up north doing about 100km/h. Weather forcast predicted down to -8'C. Drove back home via Sandviken, and dropped in on www.midland.se to say hello. All in all about 500km trip. Leaving Sandviken it was late at night and temprature was x2 the prediction... -15'C... Schubert C1 can not cope with -15'C... the visor ice-up at once... my BMW II with heated visor was not operational... and I was dressed for down to -10'C... (BIG misstake!), forcing me to drive at the horrendous speed of no faster than 80km/h all the way home from Sandviken (about 180km) due to the chillfactor effect on the visibility and insulation defecit due to the under-dressing ... Oh,... and no front-brakes either... couldn't get the ... brembos to funtion so I changed them and lost all front-wheel braking instead... (LOL).

Hello DC. I am fascinated by your RT. I also have an 80RT in the uk and it does snow here sometimes.

Hey Everyone,
Just an update. I've been conversing with Grant and in the interest of the fine folks here I've opened up my photos again. In the next month I will be going ahead and moving these photos to a different source as right now they are showing over on ADVrider as I have a sister thread to this one. Quite frankly as I am banned there, they have no right to these photos. For the time being, enjoy the thread, it was a lot of work.

Best to all,

Hi Adam,

been wondering where you got to...
Banned on ADV? Must take some doing http://bikerbytes.com/images/biggrin.gif

Hows the project coming?

Cheers,

The Raven 3 Dec 2011 22:34

John,
Project...well after riding the bike all summer I found I hated the R100GS mods with the exception of the front end. I ended up pulling the subframe, tank, seat, exhaust, shields and splashguard.
One of the reasons I actually wanted this bike was because of the size. The R100 mods made it feel like my old R1100gs that I absolutely hated to no end. The added weight made it uncomfortable, the wind shields made it even more so as it blocked needed air flow over me and the bike.
I tossed the corbin as it was very uncomfortable. I would have kept the subframe...but the diference in size had me always worried about tweaking the frame.
I want to pick up a PD tank or an HPN for trips. Until then I will keep it with the little tank.

I was a bit worried for no reason on riding it this summer. All the tweaking and ADV naysaying had me a bit freaked to ride it anywhere. I ended up taking the KLR for a northeast trip and.....it was fun but in hindsight wish I had the g/s. My wife is doing a writeup on our blog in the sig if you are interested.

Regarding ADV....never piss off a well liked member. I'm quite persnickety, and when that rubs the ADV mods the wrong way and I don't fit into their little "club" I got booted. I however was not the only one booted. My father who allowed me to use his account to contact the mods ended up also being booted for allowing me to use his username. ADV is scum in my book. Any rider who openly supports them should reconsider their position as an ADV sticker is a mark of shame for real riders.

Best
Adam

For a slightly more balanced approach, the UKGSER.com forum is better. More people with not so deep pockets and working in garden sheds rather than machine shops hang out there.

That seems to be the problem with a lot of forums. They become the domain of a knot of people that know each other post all the time and take exception to interlopers having the timemitory to open their mouths in "their" forums. They either ignore you or beat you up. Ideally I think they belong on Facebook and twatter:innocent:
It happens on UKGSER sometimes but not usually in the airhead section.

I cant recall seeing it here. The occasional knob, but mostly a good bunch of people. People are not trying to impress each other... though some ARE impressive.

I have some WP Extremes to put on the front of my GS. Just money and the inability of local machine shops to make what I ask for, holding me backdoh
Let us know when the blogs up!

Cheers,
John

The Raven 4 Dec 2011 20:39

Hey John,
It's down below my sig, the nomapnomads.com. I'll check out the UKGSer. I want to reshim my FD this winter as the play is a bit much and I noticed a bit more heat than I would like, even on a cooler day with no weight. I imagine I will find what information I need either here of there.

I will miss some on ADV, but in all I've washed my hands of it. HU is my primary as Grant although busy is always willing to actually respond to my emails.....I cannot say that about Chris MacAskill, or Baldy; the admin on ADV. For that reason alone I just upped my membership to Gold from Supporting, and praise HU for all it's worth. bier

NICE writeup by the way...

Do a google search, its not that uncommon.....their loss. I'll gladly donate my money to Grant to keep a quality site like this going.

Gretchen looks ready for the Ball

Nice job you've done with your g/s. I suspect the Albany Performance repair was a complete hack job. They took forever and then were out of business within three months of finishing with your g/s.

If I had known then what I know now. . . .

Very nice build-up. Keep us posted on continuing progress. Oh, BTW, scraped my ADV sticker off long ago:thumbup1:

Cordless...buddy, long time no hear!!! For those who dont know this is the fine gentleman who actually sold me Gretchen. Wonderful guy if you even meet him. One of the very few respectable ADVriders. :welcome::clap:

Just an update on the g/s. she's back to all blue again as I did not like the added weight of the heavier subframe exhaust and bigger tank. I just had to fix a busted turn signal stalk. She is still running great and the points system is working flawlessly. I do have an oil wheep in the front rotor area...but don't feel it's anything to worry about. The worst thing I see is that the alt light comes on at idle.

Seriously though. I had briefly concidered doing that alt option for a few minutes but it's too heavy, expensive, exposed to the elements, and again..WAY TOO HEAVY. :mchappy:

Take a look at a friend of mines mod..800watts:eek3:

Graham,
Not sure myself, but Greg Hutchinson out of CA would know as he has done a few. Not sure why you would need such a setup.

Been a while since I was on here. Been building a new house and this year a barn. The G/s is still kicking. Still looking for a larger tank for it and planning on messing with the carbs more this year are the fuel consumption is too much.

The forks are also getting a repaint and hoping to extend the skid further to the rear.

Have noticed a lot of oil leaks with new seals so have a feeling the synthetic oil is going away in favor of old dyno oil.
