r1100gs gear box

hi, i have a bmw1100gs model 97, i changed the gearbox for a used gearbox mod 95, and i have a noise when i deaccelerateand activate the clutch, i don´t know if might be the cardan or the final drive or the gearbox.
does anyone have any experience on this please.

Try asking over on UKGSer in the technical section, there is a lot of GS knowledge over there.

Sorry to say but I have some recent experience with just such a noise on an 1100GS.
Before you do anything else drain the gearbox oil and see if there are any metal pieces stuck to the magnet on the drainplug.
If so what shape are the bits ?
Flat arced pieces indicate a shim or bearing side is disintigrating, jagged chunks with rounded faces are destroyed ball bearings and jagged bits with flat and smooth surfaces could be bits of gear teeth. In any case the transmission needs to come out and get a thorough rebuild before it really explodes the works.

Had that on my R80/7 back in 2008.
Turned out to be the final drive:

You need to do as Sjoerd recommends - drain the gearbox. I would choose to drain both the final drive and engine as well.
There should not be anything else than a fine metal pouder forming a very low top, looks and feels like sort of grease. If high or sharp top = trouble.
Looking at the oil - there should be NO glitter... glitter indicates aluminum... that mean that a bearing seat has gone bad... just ask any VW drivers with the VW automatic gearbox (noticably type 2 - type 4); they can show you how it should not look like.

You need also to pull the shaft and check the u-joints. Worn u-joints will cause problems as well.

Let us know what you find.
