I have a 75,000 mile 1993 GS Dakar. It's indestructble. Some of the parts should be considered as "consumables". Expect drive shafts to go every 30,000. Gearbox failures also happen, and i suspect this is caused by water getting in when fording rivers. There are things you can do to prevent it.

Oil use should be about half a litre every 2,500 miles. Higher than that shows a problem.

Things to replace include the front brake. Upgrade it to a K100 caliper. The rear shock is made of chocolate. Ohlins is the answer.

Is it really 15,000 miles? The speedo's last about 30,000.

One further point. If you get one don't imagine that you'll ride in cities for long. The bike will change you.

Don't ask to many questions, just buy it!

Welcome to the Forum!

The R100 GS is a great bike capable of most any task short of top speed trophy's and motocross.

As pointed out, there are a few known issues, the drive shaft being the main one (30k - 60k miles, then you replace or risk it breaking). Parts and upgrades are still widely available. A better shock, and upgraded (progressive) fork springs make a big difference to handling and durability. The BMW bags are ok for tarmac only duty. For city use I'd consider mounting the low fender and put on street tires.

This bike doesn't give up much to the street models unless you are short. The advantage is that when you decide to pack in your day job and head for South America, the keys will already be in your pocket!

Enjoy.
