Ohlins shocks

After my last post I did indeed go out and buy a r1100gs. Along with it came two ohlins shocks still in boxes. The shocks on the bike are quite adequate for my needs. If I was thinking of selling them what do you think they would be worth? I can't seem to find any shocks second hand to compare prices with.

David,
assuming the shocks on the r1100gs are the same as on the r1150gs-adventure

and you want to get off paved, smooth roads

then definitely DO NOT assume that the bmw stock shock is any better than a choclate teapot...

i was in bolivia in 2001 when they were doing the photoshoot for the r1150gs-adv brochure (i'm the bald bloke on the poster and page 30 http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif )

the bike went over some very crap 'roads' but had NO luggage (the boxes in the pics are empty!)...

the stock shock started to leak oil after 600 km (that is 4 hundred miles!) and snapped (that is into 3 bits) after 2000 km! the bike ended up on the back of a truck to get it back to la paz airport, and on to germany!

so if you're considering going 2 up... with luggage... down a gravel track... or even just on european superslab

then

DON'T SELL THE OHLINS!

cheers

David, dont listen to chris... they are junk!!!

Just kidding, because I want some!!!

That is why serious riders take the stock shocks off on the showroom floor and put ohlins on before they even ride the bike. If you still want to get rid of them, and they fit my 1150 GS, I'm your man. You won't have any trouble getting rid of them. If they fit your bike...

Thanks for the advice. It seems that I may be better fitting them to the bike. However, my original question still stands. Any idea what they are worth?

visit www.ohlins.nl , the dutch importer for new prices. they have an online catalogue. i found them to 30% cheaper than the german importer.
good luck

Conclusion I came to was that 2/3 of the new price is about right. Alternatively put them on ebay and see. I am guessing that the guy you got them off would have given you the receipt.
Personally I would put some miles under your belt before you sell them on.

Been reading the chat about shocks, I did 25000 with standard shocks on my GS1150, no probs but I am in the process of buying and adventurer and I noticed a second hand one in a showroom and the rear shock was leaking, has anyone said anything to BMW, as they do advertise the bike for going around the world, and in the UK we have a law that says what ever the item ' It has to be fit for the purpose' I got tyres on a cbr replaced by honda over the same clause because they called a sports touring bike and i wore out the front tyre in 3000 miles in one week, your comments befor i go off to russia on my Adventurer.
