How best to install electrical equipment?
Hi guys,
I ride a 1200GS and have recently bought a GPS cord and a second plug for charging my ipod. What is the best way to install the leads and connect them to the battery? Sorry this is new territory for me? Thanks |
I believe this bike has a power socket. If you don't want to plug your GPS into that you can wire it permanently into the cable supplying the socket. For your ipod you can buy an adapter, auto style plug to bike plug.

Well if your looking to add some extra power taps to your bike and want it look good and be safe its going to be bit more than gust wier yer up to them ther batray.
First your going to need some rather thick wire, fuse box, relay, and if your trick a inline fuse. To this your going to need to add some BMW type plugs, powerlets. Sells them so dose loots of places gust waned to show people what they are.PowerLet Accessory Plugs and Adaptors. So I dont have to list all the things you need to do and get heres a good explanation on this page. .: Distribution Block / Powered Relay | Canyon Chasers Motorcycle Sport Touring :. This is about what I did but I used a marine grade fuse box (Blue Seas Power Block). I wire all my stuff to the fuse box the right fuse nice neat and safe. |
thanks for the info guys. Is the cable supplying the socket always on or does it disconnect when you switch off the engine?

Power is sent to the fuse box only when the key is on. To trip the relay. The engine dose not need to be running but is a good idea to. If you do not like that idea gust skip the relay and wire to the fuse box to the battery.
I put the fuse box in the area under the seat in the little space storage area cuts down tool storage area but keeps it neat. But it can go any dry place. It was bit more work but I like the result. I also put in a cigar lighter that has cap on it under the seat for my air pump wired to the fuse box. I will put in powerlets on the left side of the bike for my heated jacket, GPS and some water proof switches for some lights. I may also set up a water tight charging set up on the back. |
