1996 BMW R1100GS

I had a little steering play on my handle bar, so i replace the bearing.

I let my father in law "help me" and he over torque the bolt. :oops2:

The hole is striped and can no longer hold the bolt correctly.
The bolt is in good conditions.

Taping the hole is not an option, since the bolt is specifically made to hold the bearing.

I don't know the size of the bolt and threads. I was looking for some type of insert, but so far no luck.

Has anyone else had this issue before? :confused1:

you are right I should have posted some pictures doh (still a noob)

The plus side is that I got it fixed today. :clap:

I took it to a machine shop in Ansbach, Germany.

The bolt is an M18X1.50 (# 6 on the parts diagram). It wasn't the bolt the striped, it was the threads on the hole at the front frame.

The "Maister" there put a Heli-coil in it. Cost 42 Euros including labor (around $60)

The book calls for a 130NM torque. I had my wrench set at 120NM. :rain:

He said that it seems to be a very common thing among this type of bikes since he has done 5 other within the last few years.

Well problem solved...now lets see what I break next!!!:taz:

Pleased to hear that you have got it sorted, this is not the first case of BMW torque settings being more than the component will take, the front wheel spindle clamps on the paralever 80/100 GS is too high and will eventually strip the thread if you use the recommended torque.
