GS 1100 oil

Hello, I am new to this website I currently have a bmw 1996 gs1100 with about 70,000 kms on it and am wondering what the best grade of oil to use is , I contacted two bmw garages in dublin, one said with that mileage i should use castrol mineral based 20w50, the other said to use 10w40 of same make. This is the first bmw i have owned so any information on this would be appreciated.

Either will work just fine.

Hi Pat

Check out www.ukgser.com and www.gsclubuk.org for more info. on the bike than you will ever be able to read.

My 1100's on 109,000 miles (I've had it, second owner, since 53,000) and have used all sorts. As the engine and gearbox are separate you need a car engine oil. For the last few changes I've used Castrol GTX for petrol engines. As it comes in two litre containers cheap from Asda it's ideal. I find I need to top up about 200cc at the 5-5,500 mark between services, especially if I've done some motorway journeys.

Regards, Mick

I run my R1100GS on Hein Gericke's own brand full synthetic . I think it's a 10w50 . Cheap as chips and great stuff. I am up at 100,000km and the bike isn't using any oil at all. It's a 3rd of the price of Castrol and has exactly the same APi spec as the top castrol fully synth superbike oil which is like liquid gold - well the price is. ;)
