G/S GBox filler plug/ Lever Oil Seal
 

I am in St Petersburg and the oil seal between lever and gbox is leaking like a sieve...I have tightenned it no joy...any suggestions for a new seal in Russia. I havethe size info.

Also tryin to refill G/Box broke the allen key off inside the bolt. Openned with Big hammer and chisel, any suggestions for where I might get such a bolt in St Petersburg.

By the way Russia is cool so far! Its the bike thats miss behaving

That seal should be pretty much a standard seal - any bearing / seal supply house should be able to supply it as long as you have the dimensions / original.

The bolt is just a standard metric thread - doesn't have to be an allen head. Nuts and bolts store.

I'd try and find the shop then take it out on the spot and make sure they match it up.

Hi Grant.
I got put in touch with Alex from the St Petersburg off road club, they organise the Lagoda lake Trophy rally raid. He graciously took me and the bike to a club mechanic. We welded a 19ml nut to the top of the bolt, problem solved. I have now learnt that you can shorten the spring inside the seal to extend its life..I now also have a spare seal found at a Bearing and seal shop courtesy of Alex.
They Gbox is full of fresh oil and keeping it.
It is probably not the forum for it but if all Russia has people like this it must be a pretty fine place!

I have a G/S with a gbox leaking too, but form the kick start seal. I had battery problems lately (old...that`s the`problem) and I was using the kick start oftenly, so the leaking starts. The question is that I don`t really know if problem is in the seal or in the gasket or somewhere else. Any experience?

Nicolas, the only way to be sure is to get the bike or at least the area in doubt CLEAN, and ride it. Throw a little dust on it if it's hard to spot. Either way, it has to come out of the frame to repair. It's theroetically possible to replace the seal without removing the gearbox, but I think it would take longer than pulling the box.

Note that heavy use of the kickstarter on these has caused damage to the kickstart mechanism - bending the shaft or rotating it inside the k/s gear - both necessitating pulling the box to repair. You can tell if you have a problem here because the k/s lever protrudes more than it used to!

Time to get a new battery!
