F650 Dakar Cutting Out 2000 model
Hi all
Currently doing a trans Africa trip and in Ivory Coast. I keep having a problem with my bike cutting out. It does this after about 200k on the road or when coming into cities or on the piste. Seems to be when it gets hot or lots of starting and stopping. If I leave it for about 5/10 minutes it then starts and runs for another 8/10 k before cutting out again. The bike has the Touratech TT39 tanks fitted. Things I have done so far to try to stop this; - Have reset the ecu by unplugging and leaving disconnected - Disconnected battery for factory reset - Changed the plug - Cleaned air filter and air box - Had the injector and fuel pump cleaned, fuel pump is only 2 years old. - Fuel filter is a year old - Moved fuel filter to different position to see if I can get get more airflow just in case overheating - Cleaned and checked rubber housing from air box to engine - Battery is good and all connection also tight - Cleaned the airflow sensor - Changed oil last week. - Follow the starting procedure etc Anyone got any other suggestions that I can try? Thanks |
Vapor lock? I have no idea how your fuel system works, but if there is a fuel component running near a source of heat, I'd move it away or at least try to insert a bit of insulated and/or reflective foil between them.
If you've got any sort of sight glass in your fuel line, peer through it and see if there's fuel passing when you crank your dead bike. Then see if it looks different after the bike is cooled off enough to start and run. Note: The above suggestions date from way before the advent of fuel injection, so they may not even apply. For whatever it's worth, I read "200km" as kilometers, but "200k" as 200,000. Won't change anything, but does make it easier to read. Hope that's helpful. Mark |
Hi Julio,
Had a similar issue to how you describe on my F650 GSD - Turned out that the coil was starting to break down and failing when it got too hot. My TT39 Tanks were causing the heat to build up around the engine/battery/coil area. for diagnosis (the way i found best to do it in hindsight) Idle the bike for 10-15 minutes and see if it cuts out, then remove the tank, let it cool. repeat and see if there is any change with the tanks off. I ran the bike with the top tank cover off until I could get a new coil - simples :) HTH, Rich |
Hi Richard
That would make sense as the bike is getting so hot plus I have a tank bag on it too. We did move the fuel filter down as thought that it could be that overheating but it did not solve the problem. Will see if I can remove the cover tomorrow and put tank bag in luggage to see if it makes a difference. Will try anything at the moment as killing me cutting out all the time! Makes you wonder weather there should have been vents in the tank cover! |
Try this it fixed similar problem on my G650X:

Looks like it may be the coil, removed the tank cover and rode about 260kms without any issues. Rode through The capital Abidjan without cutting out, Need to get a new coil fitted.
