Electrical problems in Argentina
 

Set off this morning down Ruta 40, no problems. Stopped to take in the view, bike wouldn't start. Quickly realised everything controlled by the handlebar switches on my ´95 1100GS has suddendly lost power, i.e. no starter, no lights, no horn, no indicators. I was able to bump start ok and other electrics work ok, i.e. brake light, ABS. Anyone any pointers?

Pull fuses is my 1st suggestion.
The wiring harness gets abraided in certain places, over time, with wrapping and insulation going the way of the wind.
Patience and a meter.

Ditto on the fuses. Can't speak for BMW's, but I've experienced dirt buildups in the emergency shut off. Just one more suggestion. Good luck

The first thing i would check after the fuses are the positive and negative connections to the chassis and starter. Make sure they're clean and tight. This os asuming you've already checked the battery, of course! I'm not sure of your particular model, but i would assume your on-board electrical is plugged into your harness at some point under the tank. Check that! I had this problem on my '89 GS. Same symptoms, turned out to be dirty connections on one plug.

Tks for quick replies. Yes, checked all fuses, relays, connections. I'm assuming a faulty earth as it's not just the starter, but all other functions controlled by the handlebar switches. Anyway, it's 11pm. I'm off to bed. I'll look with fresh eyes tomorrow...

If you handlebar ignition switch does work, but other elec's on the bars don't, then you might be able to find a quick point to check the wiring.

Thanks for the replies. Turned out to the spade connector on the starter motor had disconnected it's self...now ok.
