BMW K100rs 16v outfit info
 

I have a Velorex 700 touring sidecar and i'm planning to attach it to a BMW K100rs 16v with a wasp subframe.

This is a first for me and i would be interested in any advice i,m not sure if the subframe will fit the 16v motor or only the 8v motor. Any suggestions on set up ideas etc?

Hi Jim,

Mine's an 8v with home made subframe, so not much I can help with on that score. I suspect there is no serious difference though. Wasp are still making the odd set of forks and frame, I'd give them a call. Drop me a PM or mail if there is anything I can help with.

Thats great you have one, i'm really looking forward to this project i hope to get it together before early summer so i can get some touring in with my son, Do you have any pics posted anywhere of your subframe? I was thinking about the leading link mod although its about £1200 i believe, i will ring Wasp tomorrow to enquire about frame and links, will be intouch. Thanks JIm

Thanks for the pics Andy, now i have a bit more insight as to my project. May i ask which tyres you use and have you changed the rear wheel as the tyre looks very wide for a standard rim, if so which rim have you used? Looks like loads of fun. Hopefully when i get mine sorted we are going to have a two week tour of Scotland with my son and the dog.

The front tyre is a K-block Metzler type thing (square section bike tyre). I had an outfit with a car tyre on the front and believe me you don't want to go there, tank slappers at motorway speeds are no fun. The sidecar is a 14-inch alloy, in fact the whole swing arm and suspension from a Ford Escourt. The rear is a Ford Sierra 15-inch alloy (195/60 tyre). This has the huge advantage that it'll last about 10000 miles and cost about £40 to replace. The PO said he ran one bike tyre on the rear and it was illegal in under 1000 miles. This seems excessive (I'm betting it was bit more), but I've heard similar before and my rough rule of thumb after a Ural, BM R1100R and Triumph outfit before the brick would be that 70 HP is about the point where the conversion is worth it. The car wheel holes are on a 130 PCD and the bike (I think) 90mm. All thats required is someone with a lathe to make you a spacer with four holes to go into the final drive at one PCD and another 45 degrees off at the wheel PCD with studs for the wheel. The thickness of the spacer should be half the difference in tyre width, so about 20mm. I didn't have this one made but I'll go measure it tomorrow if you like.

Thanks for the info. I wanted a k100 LT but i've been offered an RS 16v 85,000 miles on it needs work, ABS, Battery, Ignition Barrel etc for £500. I,m seriously thinking about waiting for an LT as i think the riding position would be more favourable, is yours an LT? I,m not to sure on how deferent they are. Any thoughts?

Mine started life as a 1985 K100RS. It was crashed and rebuilt with an RT or is it LT? fairing and a hideous lump of fibreglass on the side known as a Saluki chair (think half a Reliant Robin meets Blakes Seven landing pod) and hence only has 24000 on the clock. The owner had the sense to make a chassis as the Saluki was supposed to be a monocoque. It had lumps of scaffording tube embedded in the plastic! I stripped off tons of ****, sold :innocent: the dodgem car and built the body in the pictures. I've only been doing this since July, so I'm still learning the models and mechanicals.

I'm told the RS has higher final gearing that the RT/LT. As the car wheel lowers the gearing this has to be a good thing as fuel consumption and top speed aren't great as it is and if this was a chain drive bike another tooth or two on the gearbox would be near the top of my list. It'd be a toss up as to which is easier, fitting a touring fairing to an RS or RS final drive to an LT.

Nice Divi combo, i got a 600 divi as a run around and for the missus to run about on, i did briefly put the sidecar on it but it wasn't great. It would be great to meet up and have a chat sometime.

Just seen this post. No developments I'm affraid, I still have the Velorex 700 touring chair but not had the time or money to complete the project due to having trips away on the Strom.

I'm still hoping to get a bike to put it on and have some fun, so I will let you know, unfortunately it wont be for a while, I'm planning a trip to Morocco and back to the Pyrenees in May so once I save up again I can get on with the combo :-)
