BMW & Touratech

The dirt road I was on over the weekend vanished into a hilly, rocky, rutted trail, and I found myself picking up my Dakar a few times to assess the damage: bent brake pedal, bent clutch pedal, destroyed (and in my opinion too easily so) BMW panniers (just from falling over!) etc.

Q: What's the general sense for Touratech panniers/accessories? Though my brake and clutch pedals bent, I could bend them back. This is good. I was thinking about the Touratech kit, but they look dangerously strong (might hurt vital parts inside) any thoughts? Also, is the pannier setup more durable than the BMW setup, or should I think about bags instead?

These questions become more urgent as I plan for a long trip from Zambia to Ethiopia, so I appreciate any and all advice.

If you're getting serious, you need a custom setup, else you'll know every welding shop between your start and end places in Africa. Try Ernie at Overland-Solutions in the UK. He did a custom setup for me. It's on my website. www.nohorizons.net
