Airhead at altitude??
 

Hi folks,

I am beginning the prep for a trip to South America, and considering taking my r100gs. I think that there will be a fair bit of riding at high altitudes and wondered if anyone out there has had experience with riding airheads (2 up and loaded) in high mountain ranges? Also, any thoughts on which jets I would need to swap and by how much? (Or can I just move the needle...?)

Hi Karl,
No problem taking your airhead to altitude they just get a bit sluggish, I never bothered changing the carb settings although others might have done different.

Same as Mark, yes it's well down on power at extreme altitudes, but not enough to bother fiddling, just plan to ride slower. :)

You COULD drop the needles (the main area you ride) if you're ambitious, but I hate taking things apart - like carbs and risking diaphragm damage - in the middle of nowhere when it's working ok.
Changing the main jets would be a waste of time, as they're really only effective at 3/4 and up throttle.
NOTE: Needle JETS and NEEDLES wear on these carbs, and that makes them RICHER - what you don't want - so a fresh set before you go would be a good idea.

when are you planning to go? any idea how to send the bikes from Europe to there in a reasonable € way?

I was there some months ago with Suzuki DR650 and they adjust the carbs to less riche air fuel mix. But those bikes always work between 3.800m and 4.500 m altitude!
