Advice required for potential new BM owner
Having spent the last two years prepping an xt600 and riding around africa for a while the time has come for a change......so no more xt600 technical forum! BUT
I have the opportunity to aquire an R1100GS, it is a 94 model with 50000 miles and a full service history. Problem is, what I know about BM's you could write on the edge of a postage stamp, never mind the back. Any advice for possible problems areas? is the mileage too high? I am offering £3600 with original shocks or £3800 with two new ohlins units. Do these seem reasonable prices? As much info as possible please for a potential new BMW owner!!! Ta, Dave |
First off, I am going to recommend that you search for and visit other sites dealing with BMW's and GS's in particular. http://www.rcb.org/bmw-gs.htm is one such mail list, among many. post this same query to as wide an group as possible. I am not personally as familiar with the new 1100 and 1150 as I am the old 80 and 100 airheads, but I have heard mostly good things (aside from the obvious weight issue). This generation of BMW is and 'oilhead' in reference to the oil cooling system. There has been some negativity around surging with some bikes. The rear drives are reported to be better then the first generation of paralever, which were prone to failure at about 50k kms.
As with any bike, 50k miles is not low milage, but this is all relative to the life the bike has had. Get it checked out by someone you trust, and by all means go for the ohlins if you decide to purchase. |
