99 funduro for africa.. rebuild.. or trade???

greetings! would love some insight on the following:
planning on using a 99 funduro with 70.000k on the clock for a transafrica trip sept/nov.
upgrading suspension and brakes and few details (before even looking at outfitting a 27L acerbis tank..... cuz i cant find one anywhere....) runs about 3000USD.

The bike runs great, no oil leak on the engine, gearbox/clutch seem fine...

should i go ahead with the 3000USD upgrade or start looking at a younger model? (we paid 2800US for the bike used a year ago.....)

thx
jerome

that seems like a very expensive upgrade, could you do it for less?

If you do use the bike you have you might want to replace the steering bearings if not done recently, these go very quickly on the funduro due to the hot oil in the frame

major expense is the rear shock which has a slight leak... but as the rider is only 55 kg and I'll be doing most of the heavy stuff carrying on a 12gs, i think we can save by not having a heavy duty racing shock... so am shopping around for that...
as for the rest, new disks sprokets chain etc cant be avoided.
thing is ray here in joburg has a fully kitted 650 with over 8000US worth of toys on it for sale for just above 10G... on the long run seems it would make sense to go that way, but on the other hand that would totally eat our budget for the trip and we'd have to pospone another year... no way!
just found 2 pelican cases in my storeroom which will make great paniers... now looking for the best way to fit them on the funduro!
