89 K75 clutch problem?
 

Hey Guys,

I'm not much of a motorcycle mechanic so bare with me. Ok, I have an 89 K75 with 27000 miles on her. I've had it for about a year or so and have only had elecrical problems with it so far (bad connectors). The guy who sold it to me said the previous owner before him had lubricated the clutch splines right before selling it to him, and that he had only had it a couple months. So I figured I had a while until I would have to relube. Weather that has anything to do with my problem I'm not sure. That's were you guys come in. Anyway, here is what happened. I was cruising along at about 35mph when all of the sudden there was a terrible mechanical racket coming from the engine trany area. Obviously I pulled over to check it out. I shut the bike off and let it sit for a minute. When I restarted it it idiled fine, but as soon as I squeezed the clutch it made the same horrible sound.

So that's it. Is it the dreaded clutch splines? If, so what next?

Your input shaft splines or the shaft itself sounds like the problem.

As you engage the clutch the noice occurs?
When in gear and pulling the clutch the noice is still there?
When in neutral, no noice?

Does the noice come from the grearbox or shaft?... no so easy to tell apart sitting on the bike as you might think...

Is the power transmission, propelling, affected?

And, by the way -never- belive what another person claims that s/he has done and not done concerning services when you aquire an object... do the service yourself = then you -know- -what- has been done... (been there done that - hence my sceptisism and "trust" in my fellow man).


Friend of mine called me in a situation as you describe, but with loss of propolsion... broken splines in the shaft/bevel... sounded real interesting over the cellular -;) ...oh,... he wasn't too happy... and he did not enjoy the comments from us riding -real- BMWs (airheads with shaft in oilbath i.e.)... -:)

¤ If propelling power is afflicted = it may be splines, somewhere in the power train... ¤
¤ If it is not afflicted... then you are facing a bearing that is more or less history... ¤

decided to break her open; the clutch slines and input shaft splines are nuked. no problem, got a used clutch and shaft on ebay.
