2008 F800GS Touratech tank and suspension advice sought
My first thread on HU. Apologies if I'm in the wrong place. I've recently bought a 08 F800GS for a twenty thousand mile trip, often with long distances between gas stations.
I plan to install the Touratech big tank and I'm keen to hear about other riders experiences with the tank because Touratech aren't giving them away. I've considered all the other options and decided this is the best for my requirements/situation. I'd also like to upgrade the suspension. I want to be ready to do some tame off-road and this combined with much more weight at the front (20 litres of fuel) means the current suspension will be unsuitable. Thoughts and advice gratefully received. If it helps, I've ridden for 30 years and have some off-road experience, but I'm no expert. |
Good luck with the trip! :thumbup1:
Yes, the front suspension is a good upgrade. Since I got mine changed, the bike is much better! Some people have been keen to change the upper shock bolt, which is prone to bending. Although mine seems OK, apparently this can cause costly repairs. Many here like the Hyperpro progressive suspension. I don't think they're that expensive, and many rate them. I have Ohlins front and back, which have worked very well for my needs (my user name is more aspirational than I'd like:oops2:). If I did it again, I'd give serious thought to the Tractive suspension front and back. I think if it is capable of being up for your own needs (bike weight, luggage, you) then it's got to be better than the OE set up! |
thanks for your thoughts Endurodude. I'd come across the Hyperpro but didn't realise they are so well regarded, so that's a good steer. The Ohlins of course are on my mind, but will bust the budget which already has other stuff on it. The Tractive is news and I'll research. Many thanks.

Although it looks good, I wouldn't expect the Tractive stuff to come cheap! You can order it directly I think, and you don't have to go through Touratech. I like their stuff, but the UK 'branch' is more expensive than riding to Germany and buying it there!

Endurodude, that would be a master idea. I need to do a long ride to see what the F800gs is like on long journeys - seat and screen etc.. I speak German...I worked there for several years. I'm guessing the Touratech tank would be cheaper there too. I'll let you know. You may have saved me some cash there. I could drop in on a Weihnachtsmarkt too:)
