2002 R1150GS Starting Problems ???
 

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my 20002 R1150GS (non abs, with 24,000 K's) It's not starting. It sometimes starts and idles for a few seconds then cuts out. I've replaced the fuel pump, battery, plugs, checked the compression, fuel flow, spark even had the BMW shop (Cyclone Motorcycles Darwin) hook up the computer with no issues to report ???

All forum searches lead me to think it's the hall sensor ? I'd be greatfull if and thought someone may shed a bit more light on the issue ?

The hall sensor is the first place I would check.... You've replaced everything else bar the coils.

You could attempt to check the wiring on them as that can often be the cause for failure.

Thanks for your time in confirming my thoughts. I found this thread to check if the hall sensor works.

Remove the spark plugs. Put the bike into gear. Turn the ignition on. Turn the rear wheel around by hand so the engine turns. Can you hear the fuel pump prime on and off as the engine revolves and the hall sensor is live ?

If the fuel pump is silent then the hall sensor is the problem.

I'm off to try this out, I have a new hall sensor of an older model R1150GS (sorry I cant tell you which year) and wondered if they are model specific ?

I'm not sure how to check it if I'm completely honest with you... It's all done on computer where I work doh.

However, the symptoms are correct. No or weak spark....

As far as I know, they're pretty interchangeable. However, I'm not sure without comparing part numbers.

I'll ask our parts guy in work today.

The spark seems good, so I'd guess the coils are fine although they may be loosing power after a few seconds. I found this thread for checking the hall sensor also a link with instructions for replacing it.

I sopke to the guys at Munich Motorcycles in Adelaide, very helpfull. Cyclone Motorcycles here in Darwin were unable to give part numbers, history and as it seems read the diagnostic tool on my GS ??? Munich Motorcycles said the Hall Sensor is the same for 1100's & 1150's GS's, RT's ect. ect. part # 12117673277.

Thought I'd get a chance at fixing it yesterday although I had a HU member Chris (Upthejunction) turn up on his way to Dili with a carton of Australias finest ale strapped to his bike, maybe today :-)

I took the cover off to inspect the sensor first and found bits of magnet floating round, skipped the test, sensor now replaced, went to hit the start button to find a flat battery! Took the blindingly obvious course of action, went back home to polish off the rest of that freezing cold beerwith my new pommy mate!

Given my lack of know how with these eletrical flangamedangers I've overlooked the condition of the Bottom V Belt Pulley and the Hall Effect Gate Rotor, both dammaged which was the root of all evil. Now being air bagged after some considerable searching. My new pommy mate Chris reckons he's now got a pHd in profanity ! Doing amazingly well with the beer rituals too :-)

It was the hall sensor, gate rotor and pulley, all sorted and an easy fix, she goes and she's gone, sold to further finance the trip ;-) Sorry for the late response, had the quoit out far enough to cut tap washers of late, a week or so to go :-)
