We're also in Melbourne and planning to ship a 4WD in a 20ft container to India or Bangladesh early 2009 (when UK carnet extension runs out). Will be traveling back to the UK via Pakistan/Iran/Turkey - currently gathering shipping quotes and visa info.

Have managed to get (just) 2 BMW GSs and the landcruiser into a container before, so am sure there will be space for your bike - always another option to consider . . . .

hehe. we left australia (sent bike to UK) without having any idea what would happen when we picked it up, apart from knowing we wanted to visit some friends in europe. we had vaguely considered three options: south-east through asia, opposite to what you are on about, south down the length of africa, or ship to south america and go from there.

everything went exactly as planned: we had a brilliant time, still havin it in fact! except a bit bummed to report that it will all come to a halt in a few short weeks - we will be in melbourne to have a yarn if you want, any time after about july. meantime click below.

of course for what planning / dreaming / workshopping we did, hu was invaluable.

When are you planning to take on this journey?

I've been toying with the idea to ride from Australia to Europe via Asia for the last couple of months.

I was thinking of riding around 2010, namely because it'll take me that long to plan things out and as a novice rider get enough hours under my belt.

Can I suggest you look at the Suzuki DR650? In NZ they cost around $7999. It's a third of the price of a BMW and that's for a brand new DR. Parts would be much cheaper. Very simple and light.

In Oz you can get a long range tank for it as it only has a small tank.

Hey all,

I'm plannng the same trip pretty much, Melbourne to Brussels (landcruiser, my back won't handle the ride sadly).

Plan is tru Aus-Indonasia-Thailand then somehow to Bengladesh-India-Iran then instead of heading straight home, going east again tru Mongolia up to the easternmost point of the continent then back via Siberia.

Looking at the web so far, Myanmar seems impossible. Gotta find a way via sea or air, not funny. I guess we're all facing the same problem, Burmese authorities won't let us through.

Well it might change in a few years.

im traveling from Australia to europe to work.
I am currently in Cambodia for some time out while waiting for my russian visas to come through.

I flew my bike from Brisbane to Bangkok, since then i have traveled all around thailand, laos, cambodia, where i left my bike and went to Vietnam. I brought an old school 67 honda SS50 and traveled around. My next stop is South Korea, Russia, Mongolia then back into Russia.

If you have any questions about South East Asia... then go ahead and ask.

who did you fly the bike with? did you have to place a crate around it or will it travel as is, also how much does it usually cost.

trying to figure out if it is better to ship or air freight bikes to asia.

I flew with Qantas - uncreated from Brisbane through to Sydney to Bangkok. it cost me $650 roughly. I got charged my weight not volumetric weight which would have been higher. This was a gamble on my part, because they could not tell me prior to flying which method they were going to use - i turned up with a huge smile and was ultra friendly.

I went into the office a week before hand, found out what i needed -
Dangerous good certificate
customs clearance number

then a day or two before i wanted it to arrive, i drove it down to the airport - it was raining on the way so my clean bike got covered in mud - got the DGC then rode around to the cargo part and filled out the forms there....

one thing you need is a address in the destination you are going too. I used a name of a hotel in Bangkok - i never stayed there.

Im in the process of doing it again in Cambodia to South Korea - they are charging me $1.30 per kg.

I had an experience in travelling from Europe. One travelling agency will provide all the what you have required for travelling abroad with less charges. Have a great escape now...
