To Buy or Ship

Planning on going to NZ for a couple of months and wonder if anyone can give me advice on a UK citizen buying a bike in NZ the pros and cons etc. is it even possible. etc

Hi Mate, It's no problem for tourists to buy vehicles in NZ. Check out the LTNZ website for more details. The bike should have a current WOF inspection &t vehicle license (registration), then submit a change of ownership form (use a mate's address or your hotel etc) & you are good to go.

For bikes check out Trademe. If anything at a dealer appeals ask them about a buyback. If you spot anything around Rotorua you'd like checked out I may be able to help.

Cheers
Clint

Yes i would also go for the buy/sell option. To ship/fly bikes around the globe is a waste of money. Have a great trip :-)

Yes shipping mine to usa and back has cost a fortune.
I have emailed a few dealers and I don't think they take me seriously as most don't reply and those that have clearly have not read my email going to have to ring them.

How quickly can you get insured in NZ here we cab get it done over the phone to cover you immediately. is that possible out there? Can you recommend any companies to contact or should i leave it till i get there.
Thanks Martin

For insurance you should be able to get covered quite quickly but I'd try & get it organised beforehand just in case. I use Classic Cover who had a very good price & according to an insurance broker mate are good in the event of a claim.

You are not required to have any insurance in NZ but at least 3rd party is of course a good idea.

The cheapest way to insure in NZ is to open a bank account here with Westpac Bank, and get 12 months insurance with them, with the monthly payment option. Then just cancel the policy when you leave. A short term policy will always cost quite a lot more per month.

Where do you arrive in NZ? I may be able to help if you are coming into the South Island at the start of your trip.

Regards

Nigel

That sounds like a good idea, arriving at Auckland I will be staying at a friend of friends place till I bet a bike so should be able to sort an account from there

I have successfully bought a bike and it is in my mates garage in Aukland awaiting my arrival on the 16th of October whoop whoop

Been in Auckland a few days now. The bike I bought needed a bit of work before it was truly road worthy. i suppose thats the price you pay for buying a bike blind from a few thousand miles away. Still think it will work out cheaper than shipping mine out here.
hope to set off on Sunday still busy catching up with my mate who i have not seen for nearly 30 years.
