Third party insurance for New Zealand

Does anyone know if I need to arrange third party insurance for my Australian registered bike when I take it to New Zealand?
If so, can anyone recommend where to get it?

No it is not compulsory

Compulsory Third Party Insurance - aa.co.nz

Third party is not compulsory but you should get it as not expensive. You can by it at any car insurance place like AMI or AA plus many others. Search on the Net.

Your Rego tax that you have to buy when you get your Warrant of Fitness covers 3rd party injury under the ACC (national accident compensation scheme). However for 3rd party cover for vehicles, you will need a separate policy. Insurance is not compulsory in NZ because of the ACC scheme, but I wanted cover in case I crashed into a Ferrari or a flock of sheep.

For a foreign plated vehicle in the country under a carnet or temporary import scheme, the only insurer that would insure me was NAC. I tried all the big insurance companies, State, Star, Kiwibike, AA, AMI but they all turned me down because the bike was not NZ registered.

I pay $30NZD per month for a fully comp policy, and that is for an Auckland address also.

EyeCake, for how long was the insurance, Im now quoted by protecta for a 2 months insurance for a KTM 990 value $10,500 Third Party Liability, Fire and Theft $551.00
It seems quite expensive to me

That does seem well out of hand. However in my experience most NZ insurance companies give very little discount for 3rd party+ fire & theft policies vs fully comprehensive. However straight 3rd party is usually quite cheap.

Don't ask for short term insurance - get a year policy with the pay by instalment option then cancel it when you are done. I doubt anybody pays 6x $550 = $3300/yr to even fully insure their $10K bike!

Cheers
Clint

It was for 6 months and although I didn't need that long and they did not give refunds it was still the best price:scooter:
