Sydney to Perth via the big rock

Hey Guys.
I'm heading from Sydney to Perth via the big rock in sept for a few weeks, actually doing the return trip in 4 weeks total, it's all I can escape for. I am thinking of taking the gun barrel highway from Uluru to Kalgooie but I've been hearing it might be difficult alone, has anyone any advice or ridden this road lately.
If anyone would like to join me you'd be more than welcome
Ride on
Kev

Gunbarrel Highway @ ExplorOz

has about the most up to date info that I know of.

You need permits. You may run into strife getting a permit if you are travelling alone.

Check availability of fuel.

The Gunbarrel Hwy goes to Wiluna. Not Kalg.
What you are thinking of is 'The Great Central Road'. 2 years ago when I last used it it was is poor condition .. long sandy stretches, lots of corrugations. 15 years ago coaches were using it .. Make a booking with the Giles Metrology section to do a tour!

Yes you do a section of the original Gunbarrel (or at least you used to) on 'The Great Central Road' of about 26 km. There is talk of making 'The Great Central Road' all tar .. and extending that tar all the way to Mt Isa. Do it while it is still dirt. There is a fair amount of traffic out that way .. at least one vehicle per day on average. So if you do have trouble then sit and wait. Take it easy, if you do hurt yourself you could be in pain for some time before help arrives.

Hi Kev
I rode the Gunbarrel a few weeks ago from Giles to Wiluna. The road was fine. Very corrogated but as long as you are not in a hurry it's fine. If you need any more info let me know. We rode from Airlie Beach to Perth. Riding back again in September.
