Simpson Desert fuel stations ect
 

Hi there, I am looking for some advise of people that have done the Simpson desert crossing on their motorcycle on where you can find fuel stations whilst doing the Simpson crossing. I come from brisbane so looking to start in Birdsville. I ride a KTM 450exc. I am aware I need to carry extra fuel however still need to know where the potential stops are to refuel.

From my recollection there is none, Birdsville on the Eastern edge and if Dalhousie Springs is still operating?
On a bike on your own, you'd want to be very well prepared. Travelling with a well equipped 4x4 as a backup vehicle and carrying fuel is a lot easier.

You will need a 'Desert Parks Pass' .. it comes with maps and that have fuel etc info. If your caught without one there the fine is very steep upto $1000! The pass is good for 12 months - so you can get it well before you go, unless you have return plans < 12 months a part. It comes with a small sticker - a suitable souvenir for the bike to display.

You'll want a fuel range of at least 650km (that allows for some sand eating your fuel).

We came across a biker at Dalhousie who rode in with the front wheel wobbling all over the place with disintegrated bearing. We cobbled together a replacement that of course didn't last long but got him closer to Mt Dare.

He was carrying no gear and no food apart from energy bars and water because he had to use all his payload for fuel. He had done three previous crossings, one where he got bogged on one of the lake crossings and spent hours dragging his bike to get out of it.
We spent over a week at Dalhousie because tracks both ways were impassable after heavy rain

Bit crazy but he enjoyed every crossing.

We followed two other bikers on another trip and they were doing it very tough and they hadn't even reached the dunes. Every few miles there was a big scuffed section of track where they had come a gutser in the sand.

If you do strike rain there can be fairly long hard detours around lakes or to cross the creek so you need sensible reserves if fuel

i'd say a sat phone is a good idea. of course, many people think that danger/lack of prep = adventure. in my twisted brain, that simply leads to more sad headlines.

Steph didn't mention whethe trip will take place, but at least there is less danger nowadays since it is closed over the peak summer period because of the dangerous high temperatures.

The least fuel distance by 'roads' (not emergency use only or closed roads) is between Mt Dare and Birdsville, these are the usual refuelling points particularly for motorcycle riders. There are none between these two points.

If you use Oodnadatta rather than Mt Dare .. you add over 100 kms ... Finke is closer!
