Hi!
2 years ago friends of us took a flight from Auckland to Sydney, with the bikes on the same flight! That was with Quantas. Maybe they still doing that? werner |
Hi russjt - I'm looking into this right now, as I'm planning to ship my bike across the ditch from Auckland to Melbourne (no.1 choice) or Sydney (no.2 choice) around 10th March, i.e. in a couple of months' time.
There are a few options available, both by air and sea. In fact, I was on the phone, making an enquiry, to an AKL-based shipping agent just last night. I'll let you know how it's all going when he comes back to me with a firm quote .. which should be before this weekend. Cheers KEITH . |
awesome , thanks Keith .

If memory serves me right you should find an older post in this forum by or about a guy who frequently ships containers full of bikes both ways.

I think this is probably the shipping firm (by sea) to which Peter refers: GetRouted : Bike shipping and Tour Operator. Dave Milligan is the bloke who owns/manages Get Routed, that runs containers for bikes to~~>fro Australia (and elsewhere).
I intend, however, to get across the Tasman by way of airfreight, from Auckland to Melbourne. The two companies that I have recently received quotes from are (a) Go Logistics, and (b) Greenfreight - both firms operate from the Auckland Airport area. The total cost will depend on your bike's dimensions and weight, of course. FYI these are my machine's measurements: Length: 2257 mm (88.9 in) Width: 922 mm (36.3 in) Height: 1318 mm (51.9 in) Curb weight, with fitted panniers: approx 230.0 kg (507 lbs) Based on these figures the provisional pricings I've just received are: (a) Go Logistics total charge = NZD $2,424.51 (b) Greenfreight total charge = NZD $1,555.13 The above amounts do not include the import costs into Australia, which will involve extra AUD on both counts. See attached .pdf file for a further breakdown. Cheers KEITH . |
Get Routed is really only a good option if you are shipping out of Christchurch I think. For us, even ignoring any costs to get the bikes to Chch, it was cheaper flying out of Auckland, but we did save a few $ by having 2 bikes in one crate. Then again, Get Routed probably wouldn't have lost our Carnets...
I would take the Green freight quote with caution, when I called them up last year I was told that the guy who used to organise the bike shipping had left - I think he was the reason why Greenfreight has a good rep for shipping bikes. The man I spoke to was a bit vague about what extra charges might be involved on top of the quote, so I went with Go Logistics who seemed to have a far more definite idea of the total cost, there were no surprises with their final bill.
