Pub Accommodation Tasmania
 

Hi. My husband and I planning a ride around Tasmania. I got the ‘accommodation side of the stick’ and wonder whether someone has info on any good pubs (or other) for us to stay at? We’d like a safe place to lock our bikes at night. Ike been endlessly searching the web for biker friendly inexpensive suggestions and can find none. There must be a forum out there somewhere where bikers suggest accommodation. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you'll find that accommodation is relatively easy in Tasmania, and people will usually find somewhere for you to park your bikes safely - they don't want anything to happen to them either.

We generally make a point of stopping for the day somewhat early and checking for accommodation, that way you're ahead of the hordes and have a little more choice. Of course if you're in super high season / big event and everywhere is booked up days in advance you'll have to be more pro-active. But, we've only once had a problem and had to ride an extra 100km to get out of the town that was having a giant festival to some accommodation!

Thanks for reply Grant. We’ve been to Tassie heaps of times, but normally for hiking. As you say not a problem with accom though I thought there may be some places that have a great reputation for looking after bikers. If we had to ride another 100km to find a place to stay I’m afraid it would end in divorce

Places to stay in Tasmania
 

Tassie was my home for 18 years, and I now visit regularly including every second year on a bike. It is generally more relaxed and easy going than other States. The first thing is to avoid Hobart from 24 December to about 16 January as there are many Events on then, and hotels are booked solid. The best time is from Feb to May as the weather is most stable and there are a few less tourists. Many of the towns are now having their 200th anniversaries so finding "an old English pub" is super easy in these places eg Bothwell or Derwent Bridge where there are three. I never book and always find at least one room. Howver, almost all the accommodation in Zeehan is owned by the one group, so booking there is best. There are many hotels and motels on the EAst Coast, as this is "summer vacation land" but they are booked through January. Other times it is easy. Sometimes a van in a caravan park is a cheaper and better located option. List me the towns that you wish to stay in and I will recommend specific places. Also a general budget.

I have recently returned from three weeks touring Tasmania. I was rarely concerned about bike security and only once, having prebooked in Launceston, did I decide that security was an issue and I looked for an alternative which, as is often the case, turned out to be a far better stay. The Wharf Hotel in Wynyard advertises secure motorcycle parking which, it turns out, is in the auditorium of the adjacent theatre, the grandest ‘garage’ the bike has ever enjoyed. I generally use a disc lock, the only visible form of security. Being a small island on several occasions people remarked later on seeing my bike outside different motels etc. and proprietors were generally of the opinion that security was not an issue in Tassie, although this could have been said in defence of tourism.
