paperwork needed for oz, new zealand

apart from the usual inport stuff, what do I need to ride my own british registered bike in Oz or New Zealand. such as compulsory insurance, road tax permits etc
Thanks

Technically, the bike must have a road permit issued from the local AA. They will also issue you 3rd party insurance -- local insurance agents (back in 2001) would not offer insurance to non-Aussie registered bikes.

Victoria and NSW wanted some A$275 for 6 months (liability and permit), while we paid only A$50 in Brisbane when we claimed the bikes were for solo riders. For 2-up, they would have wanted A$150/bike.

In NZ, insurance is not required (but very cheap). You also are supposed to have a road permit of some type, but we just flashed the carnet and said, "sure the bikes are registered, here's the stamp from your customs agent!". But, you may not be using a carnet...

Note that Aus is NOT "the usual import stuff" - see the "Paperwork" link on left - and look for the Aus info. VERY impoortant!

Thanks for the info, I have a carnet so getting the bike into Oz should hopefully be no problem.

Hi Paul, Are you shipping or flying your bike to Oz and NZ. Be aware that there are expensive extra charges if you are shipping into Oz. It is much better to fly your bike, both Quantas and Air New Zealand are good. Either way your bike and camping gear must be extremely clean. The carnet works just fine.
Both countries are great for riding, Have fun. Cheers, Cameron
