NZ Oct - Dec 19 UK bikes - insurance options?

Hello all!

I'm hoping to ship bikes to NZ in October for a trip around NZ.
Please could someone let me know how I can get fully comp insurance for UK riders on UK bikes in NZ? Also, will we need to get a NZ WOF on arrival?

We're hoping to ship camping stuff to keep accommodation costs down. We will arrive in Auckland mid-October, head north then back down the cover the east coast before crossing to the South island, do a figure 8 (down to Christchurch, across to Greymouth area then down to Queenstown/Dunedin, back to Christchurch via Tekapo then over to Nelson), back to the North Island to travel up the West coast back to Auckland.

Really really excited about the trip, just don't want any financial surprises!
Any route suggestions would be gratefully received...
Thanks in Advance!

Sounds great!
You may find it useful to contact the AA or customs in NZ for more info, they're really helpful :)

There seems to be various opinions on temp imports. Some got away with paying almost nothing and with very few checks, while others got delayed by customs and charged by MPI.

Make sure all your bike and camping gear is spotlessly clean. MPI may spray it anyway.

Insurance isn't compulsory in NZ so ensure you have good medical cover or pay the ACC cover as suggested on this AA site:

https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/im...e-temporarily/

Don't over-plan, there are no super-fast highways in NZ and while the twisty roads of the south island are a bikers dream, most visiting tourists are used to driving on the right and our roads seem to send them into a flap (and much worse). Ride defensively, stay safe and look for unmarked police cars :oops2:

PS why not get in touch with rockhopper to ask what he did

I used a company called Kiwibike Insurance Ltd who insured my UK V Strom. I paid for an annual policy and cancelled it when I left. The annual cost was just under £200. They can be reached on info@kiwibike.co.nz, and need an address you are staying at to post info and card. It includes breakdown cover. Also look out for the tourist offices that have a large “i” outside. They offer a map of interesting routes which is brilliant.

All good advice above. Also, let me know when you are expecting to be in the Canterbury area. I may be free for a beer/ride/planning meeting.

Cheers

As I mentioned, just don't plan too much or too rigidly.
Today, a bridge on the main highway just south of Franz Josef collapsed after 2 days of continuously torrential rain. Since this is the main and only route, it should be rebuilt by the time you visit NZ but best check for NZTA updates before you arrive.
