NZ Late 2017
 

Long story short....

I'll be in NZ before the end of 2017 on a 3 ish year plan. During that time, obviously, i'll need 2 wheels...

I've made enquiries about shipping my 'Mondo Sahara' XR over from the UK, and the prices are reasonable... ( or perhaps even a different 'bike )

Will I have to register the XR over in NZ? I guess i'll need a WOF for it as well when I get there? As well as insurance etc...

Also...

The grand plan would be to ship whatever 'bike I end up taking to NZ over to Singapore at the end of the 3 ish years... then ride back to Scotland...
Is that realistic? Anyone done a similar trip? Advice?

Would it be easier/cheaper to get a UK 'bike and ride it back? Or buy something in NZ and ride that home, and 'import' that back to Scotland?

Hi Matt. Trademe.co.nz is the place to look for second hand prices. I'd expect that second hand is cheaper in your part of the world.
I think you can only ride on a foreign reg in NZ for 12 months max. Getting a NZ reg will cost about $5-600 as they insist on some brake parts being replaced with certified parts now. This includes the inspection fee and the plating costs.
WOF will be needed but easy to get and cheap.
Insurance is NOT mandatory.
Plenty of people have done the NZ-UK trip and there's lots of stories here on the HUBB.
I'm not sure on the specifics of importing into the UK but in general it seems easiest to bring a bike permanently into a country when it's already from that country.

I moved from the UK 2 years ago & didn't bring my bikes or car because I was advised the WOF is fairly stringent with used imports, particularly regarding rust, dirt and emissions. Be prepared to pay additional fees for getting through biosecurity etc - that way, if you're not charged, it's a bonus :)

Saying that, I regret not shipping my BMW as it had been set up just the way I liked it & finding a replacement here would cost me double the price it sold for on eBay :(

So if you really love your XR, it may be worth the financial pain. Equally, you could probably find a decent DR650 for not much more than the shipping costs.
