@clintnz, whynot,
Nice to read this ... yes i will do and meet you for a bier or 2 ;-) i think you guys can help me to find the small roads, Gravelroads, i like to Drive Naturalroads ;-) not the big one. I like Enduro riding :D @shewolf, thanks for the offer, would like to come back for this then i look for some accomodation from 17. to 20. jan in this time must bring out the bike from the warehouse and all my luggage Gubi |
Hi Gubi,
After your arrival, try to go straight to AirNZCargo, where I suspect your bike will be. A friend of ours cleared his bike in 1.5h on the day of his arrival. It took us a week without a carnet... I think the best gravel roads you will find in the S Island high country and up here in Northland. Look us up, we have a room for bike travellers. |
@beddhist,
Thanks, i shipp my Staff and i have to go to the warehouse. I have a carnet, and my Agent here in switzerland, he is e friend of my, have also an agent in auckland that will do the Paperwork:mchappy: I have 3 month time to look around on the S and N Island, but i am open for all good insider tipps :D:D Gubi |
no worries, I will send you my contact details by pm

Hi Gubi,
I'm shipping my bike from Kathmandu to Auckland around 15th Jan so will look out for you! Am going to be in NZ until April time so I guess we'll pass on and off on the road, will be good to meet you and get a beer or two. Sorry to slightly hi-jack this thread, but does anyone know if there are facilities to uncrate a bike in the customs area or do you need to organise a place to deliver it to and do it there? In Delhi I was hoping to do it at the airport but in the end had to get it on a truck and dropped on the street outside a hotel - would be good to know if I need to organise something similar or not? Thanks in advance Stu The Big Trip: Stuart Muxlow's big motorcycle ride out |
Try to get them to put your bike on a pallet, instead of in a crate. If your bike ends up at AirNZCargo then you could uncrate it in the car park, assuming you have the tools to do it. We were able to unwrap ours in front of the warehouse, but I don't know what happens if you have a crate.
|
i am in contact with my Agent from Burnard International, the guys have a warehouse in the airport area. i talk with my agent here in switzerland and he tell me i can unpack my Bike in the warehouse and store the crate there for the 3 months. have to pay for store 3 month 150 NZD.
@stumuxlow, i think we see us in auckland, i arrived at the 17. Januar 2012 and then i go straigth to the warehouse ;-) how is Nepal now ???? i was there in 2009 .. I was up in the Mountain, Anapurna in Muktinat with my Bike ;-) when you stay in Phokara go to the Busy Bee and say best regards from Gubi to Rick .. with witch Company you ship your bike ??? i Fligth the bike from Kathmandu to bangkok with the eagle eyes company. look forward and yes abeer is all time good ;-)))) Gubi |
Hi, that sounds good, I was concerned because when I flew into New Delhi earlier there was no space at all to do any uncrating and they needed an addresss to get me bike out of the airport site as soon as possible.
Nepal is amazing, my favourite country of the trip so far! I too have hooked up with Eagle Export (eagleexport98@yahoo.com / eagleandsunnepal@gmail.com)), Suraj and Sara and they're sorting out the shipping for me after christmas. Am in Pokhara at the moment, and may be for a few days suffering with electrical problems on my bike, so I pop round to the Busy Bee often - shame Hearts and Tears next door is closed this summer! Hope to meet you in Auckland soon |
Ok, i think Rick need Holidays ;-)
You look around for Help with your electik prolem on your bike ?? Rajus Motocycle repair is on of the best in Pokara, is near from Busy Bee or ask there for Rajus he is a very good Mechanical. We see us and have a good time in Nepal is also my favorit Country ;-) Beautifull people an Landscape.... i love it..... Gubi |
hi, just did all the MAF and WAF and all paperwork's... not sooo mad in the end of the day you can do all easely by yourself in a couple of hours and that keeps the extra costs low... look at RTWbyBIKE for some details ...
cheers and good riding and choose your tires wisely, mine got ripped by this NZ tar they use here super-fast... have to get new one after only 4000KM .... tsssssss :welcome: |
Put Mitas tyres on, they last a lot longer. You get them from www.lmsimports.co.nz.
|
Thanks for all the good Tipps.
I have new SpareTyres in my Crate, i use the Heidenau K60, now is in the front Conti TKC 80, and rear Michelin T63, i think after 3000km i must change this Tyres. Wath is about insurance for the bike in NZ ???? I stay there for 90 days, somebody now a cheap insurence for this time ???? Thanks and see you in January Gubi |
Hi
I'm landing in Auckland on 10 January and plan to buy a bike and wandering about for 3 months so our paths may cross for a drink at some point. Anyone reading this know of either a good bike dealer or someone selling a bike? Please PM me. Kate |
Gubi: by registering your bike you are covered for injuries to yourself and others. You don't need other 3rd party insurance and you will find it difficult to get as a non-resident.
Kate: I don't have the info at hand, but look around this forum section and you will find other posts with relevant links. Do contact the people in the KiwiBiker forum. They are a friendly and welcoming bunch. :welcome: to NZ! |

About the insurance there are some opinions, yes you are covered for any health issues but when it comes to damage you are not insured at all. I took an insurance here and it took me 5 minutes on the phone and it was done. I took 3 Month full coverage for something like 90EUR, fair enough. Here are the details nac insurance Natasha Foster Broker Support Team Level 3, 36 Water St. Po Box 1840 Whangarei,New Zealand Tel. 0800 502 508 Fax +64 9 438 2888 email: sales@nac.co.nz Vehicle insurance specialists for young drivers and high performance cars and motorbikes I met some guzs which HAD a cmpervan, going on the wrong side of the street hit another car and thats it with their holidays, without insurance they had to get all their money together to pay the damage they caused and of they wend home again... avoidable for just some 90EUR! NZ is FUNtastic and I am traveling from one friend to another (which I didnt know B4...) Tomorrow we take the ferry to the south island, finally going to the mountains... a bit sick of all the incredible beaches... need some mountains for a breack ... have a safe trip... cheers Sascha |
Yes, we insure our car and truck, because you can cause a lot of damage with them. How much damage can you cause with a bike? As for the vehicles themselves, I only drive what I can afford to replace.
Enjoy NZ and your newfound friends. |

Its not the damage to my bike I am talking of. If I crash into a Ferrari (and dont tell me there are no Ferraris in NZ, have seen quite a lot of expensive cars around) or an Fueltanker its a lot of money, doesnt matter what you drive, a bicycle is sometimes enough... Who cares then about the own bike. In the end of the day I dont care who takes which insurance, should be just a tip. Everyone has to decide to take a risk or just spend some small money...bier |
@beddhist,
thanks a lot, :thumbup1::thumbup1:, by registering your bike you are covered for injuries to yourself and others. Thats will to be adequate. @bikerIn, thanks and dont worry, i drive from europe to malaysia 1 1/2 year without a insurance :innocent::innocent: . i am not on Holidays, i am on travelling and need e bit adventure :angel::angel: @Mistress-Kate, maybe we see us on the Road for a bierjeiger i am also for 3 months on the way and looking around for some gravelroads or harder enduro trails i dont like asphalt:mchappy::mchappy: Gubi |

Hi there. We are in Christchurch and also love the gravel stuff. we could meet up for a beer (Christchurch must be the centre for small breweries as we have at least 15 here now) and I'll draw all over your map. If you want a good start, come down the Molesworth Track, just south of Blenheim to Hanmer.

NZ is a beautiful country with lovely people - both living there and traveling. The BBH network is a list of independent hostels all around NZ which most peoplw will use more than say hostelworld. You can pick up a free bbh book at any hostel or tourist office for free. The website is BBH World travellers Accommodation New Zealand. Most people get a SIM card when they arrive which you can use to call the hostel, usually a day or two before you arrive to book.
Many hostels also have a spot for putting up your tent and you can then use the kitchen and showers etc. in the hostel. Call the hostel or just drop in when you get there if you want to camp. It's generally really easy to find the hostels using the bbh book book as it has little maps of every town with the hostels on there. A couple of my favourite places to stay were at 'Solscape' in Raglan where you can spend a few days learning to surf on the beach. The quality of hostels in NZ is great with not too many people, very homely and easy to make friends. Most of what you find out will be when you get there from other travelers who always like to share their experiences. David, Ireland. |
