Motorcycle - Canning. Dream or nightmare ?
 

Hi Folks

I am planning on doing the Canning Stock route.
Big commitment though seeing as I am based in Aberdeen, Scotland (could I start any further away ??? )
I am at the stage of putting together an expedition outline to tempt others on-board.

However, I have a big decision regarding the make up of the group.

Ideally I would like 2-3, 4x4's and 2-3 solo motorcycles. Drivers would alternate between 4x4's and bikes as the mood took them !

But.... Is there too much soft sand to make the trip enjoyable on a motorcycle ?

If the whole trip on a bike is going to be a slog....I would rather we forget the bikes.

Your opinions please.
I would especially be interested in hearing from anyone who has done the CSR by motorcycle !

Two of my friends did the CSR on small Yamahas through a guide company based in Perth. There was on 4x4 support vehicle and a small group of riders.

They both loved it; but it was a slog, especially the early days, I believe. I think it was the challenge that made it such a special experience.

Last month, I mentioned I'd like to do it and my friend said he'd like to do it again too - so it must have been enjoyable. If you enjoy off-roading on sand, then go for it. You always have the luxury of driver/rider rotation.

In case you have a choice, I think lighter bikes would be better.

Theres a guy I went out with for a day a couple of years ago. I believe he still does the Canning Stock route with support vehicles.

I drove the Canning in 2006 with two other vehicles. The sand ridges are quite often very soft and these would only be suitable for a light off-road bike with sand tyres. Definitely not a track for a road bike in my opinion. Most drive the CSR from south to north, Wiluna to Halls Creek. My recommendation is to consider north to south, the sun is more over your shoulder and less in your eyes, plus the sights have better illumination this way, not as much in the shaddow.Cheers, hope the trip turns out well.Chris

Further ..

The 4WDs will be fine .. there are enough of them doing that trip that the track is cleared by them.

But on a bike the ends of the handlebars will contact the shrubs/trees on the sides of the 'road' so good handguards are a necessity. And no you cannot ride in the centre of the 'road' as this is a ridge .. with the ocasinal roock hidden in the vegitation that trys to grow there..

---- I'd recomend a 'spare' person incase someone is injured and unable to ride/drive. And a provision to put a bike inside one of the 4WDs .. dismantled if required .. incase one fails to proceed.

Do not do it in summer .. way too hot! November to Feb to be avoided!!! And possibly an extra month either side.
