Let's start: Auto from SA to Aussie-land
For your information:
I am planning to take my car from South Africa to Australia, somewhere June 2002 (after overlanding from Amsterdam). I have checked with the Australian Customs service in Brussels (+32 2286 0582) if there are any specific requirements to allow importation of the car in this case. The only requirements are: Carnet de Passage (which you have anyway), the car should be CLEAN (and by that the probably mean CLEAN CLEAN) and the car should be in road worthy condition (which I assume has been proven in case you reach South Africa from Europe). The last point could give some conditions if you have damaged your car or windscreens or alike. QUESTION: Who has experience doing this before; anything special to report? What would be the right place to ship from/to? Durban/Port Elizabeth to Perth??? Thanks, Jan. ------------------ |
Hi Jan,
The "road-worthy" condition means it will pass safety etc tests - not just is it able to move under it's own power http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif Lights, mirrors, muffler etc all have to pass. Remember Australia drives on the left, and you need a sign on the back noting right hand drive. Should be able to do that there. Perth would be the optimum place to arrive, but keep Darwin in mind as well when checking prices from SA. You never know. Entering Australia is relatively painless, and if you have made it through the borders in Southern Africa, your paperwork is obviously in order, so you should have no trouble. ------------------ Grant Johnson Share the Dream! at: www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
An excellent source of info, actually going the other way Oz - Africa - Europe is Geoff Kingsmill website: http//africa.dreamers1.com
I actually went into a bit of research from Fremantle to SA, so I guess the reverse can happen. Anyhow, Willhelmson Line (I think)used to have a RO-RO (roll on - roll off) going to SA but appears the best bet is to containerise the vehicle and ship Port Elizabeth to Fremantle (I researched the other way so it must work in reverse). Container size is 2.278 x 2.286 m. Costs, and these are approximations: Freight: USD$1075 Handling: USD$180 Incidentals: USD$165 You will have to have an agent to clear your vehicle in Fremantle, that can be arranged at SA. Well best of luck on your adventure. The costs and these are approximations ------------------ Mark & Lynda |
Thanks a lot!
Will keep you all informed. Right now we are actually in Uganda, just arrived for some 2 or 3 weeks. After that we will travel south through Kenya and Tanzania and so on, depending on the rain. Save Journeys! |
