Leaving your bike/4x4 in Aus on Carnet
 

Hey guys,

We dropped into Aus about 3 months ago after our long trip through the former USSR (Sirocco Overland | Сирокко Оверленд | Solo Vehicle Dependent Exploration, Travel & Adventure). We came in on a Carnet and a friend has a wedding we have been invited to. in Thailand.

Is it possible to leave the country and leave your 4x4/bike behind? If you read the Carnet it says no.

I tried emailing the AAA but I got a short shitty reply back saying it was nothing to do with them :thumbdown:

I thought I would ask here if anybody has done this, how they went about it and were there any problems.

And help appreciated.

I've not done it. But as the condition of entry on the carnet says "if you leave the country, so does the bike/vehicle". You may be able to store the vehicle in a bonded area and side step the regulations - that will depend on the carnet and if that is sufficient to make it appear that the vehicle has left the country. Maybe try Patricks Stevedoring who run most of the vehicle import/export wharves which are within the bonded areas of most wharves.

Hi,

Officially you can't leave the country,but contrary to other countries,australian authorities don't stamp the vehicle into your passport.So when you leave,the border police doesn't know about it and as long as you come back in time and no one drives your vehicle around and is involved in an accident,no one cares.
Friends of mine have done it,left their Toyota in our shed and I had to look after it.At least they paid me in liquid currency.

I was thinking along the same lines as you RM. I could securely leave it locked up at work for the 2 weeks. I wonder what the bonded storage would cost? Probably more than I currently earn in a week.
