Tips for Oz
Sorry I can't help with the bike and documents questions, about "other tips" have a look at 4WDing, Camping & Caravanning around Australia @ ExplorOz
This is one of the best sites for asking questions on the Forum about travel, outback, camping and the like. The site has good road condition info also. Let me know if I can help any other way. Hope you have a great trip. Chris |
Licence for a 650 etc .. you need a full licence .. ie over 1 year on a provisional licnece - teh one after the learners licence.
6,000 usd = aprox 6,700 aud .. you should start to think in aud as that is what you'll use here. Look here for 2nd hand bikes Motorbikes For Sale Trading Post - Buy and sell Australia wide The bike will come with 3rd party personal insiurance - all that is leagaly required. It is advisable to have 3rd party property insurance .. in case you damage some expensive car. That will not cover damage to your bike. Eastern D? Up to Cains, across to 3 ways, down to Adeilaide, across to Melbourne and back to Sydney? Misses Katheren, Kakadu (north) ... diversions to Flindrs Ranges, Oodnadatta Track ... ummm |
hi idan,
i plan to be in aus. as well at that time hoping to be riding a dual sport, probably a klr650. it would be great to meet someone to do some riding with. i'm planning a coast to coast trip or just whatever happens. drop me a line if u want to discuss it more, cheers, |
Hi,
For the bike I'd recommend a KLR650,DR650,XT600 I'm in Sydney if you'd like to meet up let me know, currently have a KLR650 and could take you on some local rides and further afield around NSW,Queensland. Snowy Mountains etc would start getting a bit cold during time your looking at traveling. But West and North would be perfect. All the best. Cheers, David |
There is also Used Motorcycle For Sale - Buy and Sell Used Motorcycles Australia - bikesales.com.au and of course ebay eBay Australia - Buy or sell practically anything on eBay, the world's online marketplace
Cheers, Dave |

G'day Idan,
I'm biased but I'd go for a nice little BMW R65 with panniers and rack, cheapish, very reliable, lightweight, good all round tourer - handles OK on bitumen and excellent on dirt roads in comparison to most road bikes. Its easy to maintain and fix if something goes wrong with it, see if you can get one with wire wheels as they are more durable than mag wheels. A set of Metzler universal tyres will get you most places with ease. They easy enough to sell when you want to leave the country. We've toured Outback Australia often on R65s, and seen plenty of R series BMWs in places that only 4x4s seems to get to. I've seen film of two guys floating BMWs across the Jardine River (Cape York) on air mattresses. Buying a vehicle in NSW - have a Google for NSW RTA and then search for buying a vehicle - you will need to comply with all the requirements that they list. Each State has a slightly different process for ownership, and third party injury insurance - I dont think any State now provides injury insurance if you are at fault in an accident - so buy some private medical insurance that covers you in the event of an accident. One trap to be aware of - NSW has an annual roadworthy test, you have to be in NSW to get it renewed, without a valid test your bike is unregistered and uninsured. Victoria (Melbourne) and Queensland (Brisbane) only have roadworthy tests when the vehicle is sold so its just a case of paying for your registration/insurance renewal wherever in Aus you happen to be. Plan the time of year that you will be doing your trip - North of Australia is wet season from approx late October to early March, hot and very humid and not very pleasant, Townsville is presently cut off by about 150mm of rain. The best time for travelling North is the winter - dry, 20C to 25C day time temperatures, night time can be a lot cooler inland. Southern States (NSW and VIC) will be cold during the winter - snow in the Alps, etc. Wet, windy. South Australia will have varying weather from North to South. |
Thank u all!
