Coming to Australia
Hi
I'm currently touring around the world I left the UK on 22 Mar 15 and rode to Vladivostok and put the bike on a boat. I'm now waiting in Korea while I wait for my bike to arrive in Oz about the 22 Sept 15 in Melbourne. I have a year visa and a few old friends in varies places but looking to make some new ones. The rough plan is- Sept collect and service bike in Melbourne :scooter: Oct go to HU meeting 23/25 Nov Tasmania (Weymouth ) Dec Canberra Sydney Jan Brisbane beer Feb/Mar Cairns (meet family from UK?)beer Apr Darwin May Ayres rock Jun Perth beer Jul Adelaide/ Kangaroo island beer Aug Ship the bike to NZ from Melbourne I know plans change so I try not to plan to far ahead but as I intend to meet people I would like to try and give them as much warning as possible of my plans. I will be riding a BMW 1200GSA and happy to lay on some dirt tracks but nothing to serious as I'm on a fat tractor. The main question is with the weather in mind is this route doable or am I going to cook in the heat or get washed out in the rain? I happy and looking forward to meeting fellow riders as I travel so will try and advertise on here and Facebook HU as I start to head in your direction. Any advice welcomed and thanks in advance. ?c? Seasons and places...
Summer ... very hot inland (Canberra, Ayres Rock) hot and wet up north (Darwin etc) Winter .. cold in the south (ice + snow in the extremes).. Tasmania, Melbourne, Canberra etc. Do you have to meet the family in Mar in Cairns .. or would later in the year be possible? If that is flexible then the route can change to some advantage. --------------- Late Sept arrive Melb Oct HU meeting .. then Canberra. This could then avoid going inland in summer. rest depends on the family meeting time ... Tassie .. 3 weeks would be good. Got a GPS? |
Hi Warin
That's what ii thought I had planned your summer (Dec Jan ) down south then head north for your winter. Coming from England I don't mind a bit of rain as long as the roads aren't washed away. No flights have been booked from the UK yet, but I also understand Australia is a big place so I will take all year to get round and enjoy it. I'm happy to hear your suggested route or you can PM me. Yes to sat nav just need to load open street maps on Garmin Zumo 660 Daren |
Hey Daren
Where in Korea are you? I arrived in Hongdae today from Vladivostok. Planning on shipping to Australia (Darwin) at the end of September /Beginning of October Cheers Mark |
Hi Mark
Im currently in Busan and going to Jeju tomorrow for about a week before heading of. but no bike. How long are in Oz for and do you have a rough route? Daren |
From Darwin I'm planning on heading for the east coast. I have a friend who lives in Melbourne who intends to fly north to meet me somewhere around Brisbane and travel back to Melbourne along the coast/take it as it comes.
I probably wont be in Aus till late October / early November as I intend to take a flight somewhere while the bike ships. I'm just looking for somewhere to stay in Korea at the moment. got a few weeks to sort out shipping. |
I'd reverse your route sort of.
Oct HU + Canberra Nov Sydney Dec down the east coast to Melbourne Jan Tassie Feb across the bottom to Adelaide, Perth (follow the coast - it will be cooler) March up the west cost to Broome April across the top to Darwin/Kakadu May center - Alice Springs, Ayres Rock (cold at night!!) June across to Cairns - Family July down to Brisbane Aug down to Syd then Melb. Yep I know the family will miss summer in blighty .. but winter in Cairns would probably be better :Beach: Passing broad brush strokes across to the other 'experts'. |
Thanks Warin
Some else also suggested going around that way. I was just in the process of changing the route but very happy with switch back from Sydney. I was just trying to have a rough idea of when and where but I'm flexible so will just see how it goes ref time in and around each location. Hope to see you there and buy you a beer bier Cheers Daren |

Might catch you up for a beer then :mchappy: |
Hi Mark
Happy with that beer Daren :scooter: |
Warin's on the money. Have your Relo's been to Carins before, at that time of year? If not, they and you are in for a shock. Heat, with oppressive humidity. I lived in the UK for nearly 6 years and witnessed, what 28 deg C did to the local population, let alone 36 deg C and 100% humidity. It was kinda funny, at least from my perspective. Just meant that you had to keep hydrated beer
Stay updated here, If we are about when you pass by Merimbula/Pambula, then we could catch up. two problems to that plan. I work away 1/2 the year and this time next year we ship ourselves and bike to South America to start our RTW trip. Safe travels.:mchappy: |

Hey Mate,
I agree with everyone.. south for summer north for winter.. if it helps. Australia's official weather forecasts & weather radar - Bureau of Meteorology will give you average temps rain...... ect ect... When you get to perth drop us a line. love to have beer!bier Xander |
Thank you every one for your advice, I am happy to follow Warin's route.
I will try and keep you up to date to try arrange the locals for a beer and advice. Cheers Daren |
Adelaide Hils
Hi Daren,
Sounds like a great ride you have planned. Send me a Pm when you get near Adelaide in Feb? I reside in the Adelaide Hills and ride a Super Tenere. I could put you up for a few nights and show you the area. If timing works out I could also show you some great outback tracks in the state. Ride safe and I look forward to hearing about your adventures. Jeffrey |
