HI

I'm intersested in travelling from Perth to Darwin or Broome using the Canning Stock Route and then maybe up to Cape York via the Telegraph route.

It this point I dont know much about it, can anyone point me in the right direction for prep, routes and how to go about actually doing it...

I believe its now do-able as there are fuel stations on the 'CSR' but do you still need to go with a 4x4.

At present its just me and fairly flexible as to when I do it.


Any help apreciated.

exploroz is fairly good... it does cover most OZ tracks of interest. There are a number of others you can look at too on that google search ...

As for the CRS 'doable' ... well it has been done ... a number of decades ago ... by motorcycle....

but the exploroz will give you some basics, the HU will give you more. So read that and you have the basics? Or am I missing something from your post?

Not a lot of fuel possibilities along the Canning for motorbikes and you will need an endurance of 1000km in sandy conditions.

Problem for bikes is that long sections of the route are lined with very tough tall shrubs and trees that overhang the two wheel ruts and it will tear you to shreds. So usual thing is to cross back and forth between the two tracks or spend long distances riding on the sandy bit between.

Bikes do do it - we followed a couple up but I don't know whether they had arranged fuel dumps. One German Biker we talked to at the Laager at Willuna had a dirt bike that was essentially a fuel tank on two wheels and he was about to head north.

NB Southern winter is the only time to consider and you would need to be out the Cape country before the wet season

Whilst it is doable, I knew of a few guys on BMW R60s who did the CSR in the late 70s or early 80s, its not a solo trip and will require someone to drop fuel for you at one or two of the wells. I'm pretty sure ExploreOz has some details about who to contact. I think they will only drop 205 litre drums - so its a good idea to have a few mates along to divide the costs - which will be expensive. Dont forget a hose to siphon the fuel.

I think a BMW K75 from Sydney did it two up in the 90s, so can be done with standard roadbikes with some offroad tyres fitted.

I'd say three riders is the safe minimum as a dislocated shoulder could be fatal if no one comes along for a couple of weeks/months and you are travelling alone. With so many dunes to cross taking a tumble is a fact of life, it just depends on the speed you are going when you hit the dirt. If you can get hold of the people who drop the fuel you'll be able to find out when others are travelling to reduce your isolation risks.
