riding a sportsbike around oz...crazy?

what fuel range would I need to achieve this?

:mchappy:Yea man fantastic way to see Aus i reckon ...im just finishing a trip round Oz and the Highlands of Victoria and NSW have some fantastic roads where only a sports bike would do them justice and Tasmania is sports bike heaven...unburbloody beilevable.

Range wise 300km would adequate but even if you run out some one will help you....Its a great country with great people.....Ive had a ball.

Yeah Id like to do the trip on something abit different, it seems like everyone does it on an adventure bike.

Man we have some awesome off-road riding in this country you would be ABSOLUTELY CRAZY not to take advantage of it.

State forests, deserts, mountains, dirt roads are everywhere! Unless you want to be stuck on a highway for your entire journey taking pictures of bogan houses in rural areas I highly suggest you reconsider.

Not sure about North of West Australia but all along the eastern seaboard, and along the south coast will not be a problem. Ah why would you want to do it, just come to Tasmania, so far in all my travels on the mainland I have not found anything comparable. hehehehe

You can go anywhere on pretty much any bike. The only limitations are comfort and fuel range. The other thing to consider is how often you'll be able to use the 'benefits' of the bike. A sportsbike like an R1 or Blade will be great fun on the mountain roads. On the long straights, if you're going the whole way round Oz, you will eventually be caught by the coppers. You'll prob also want to take it easy-ish on long dull stretches as those are the ones where you need a 160 mile fuel range. The final downside of sports bikes is that they can run hot.
I was pondering taking a Mille out to Oz when I was living there 5 years ago but decided against it for practicalities. Doesn't mean that it can't be done, though.

but i agree with pocket head - there is so much of the real australia well away from tarmac that you would be missing the point. get a swag to sleep in and something tough to carry it on, IMO.

as for needing a sportsbike to do roads justice, i've always thought it more enjoyable to find a road that tests the bike and rider, without hangin out with other road users, and without the tedium of asphalt. and if you go fast in australia you'll get heavy fines sooner or later, or even get your bike impounded if you get caught truly "doing the road justice" on your 'blade or whatever.

with a fuel range of 250km you will be carrying fuel around the northwest and up the middle to be certain.

I thought the north east would be the major fuel supply problem area.
The cops are a real worry, sooner or later you do get caught because it is hard to "behave" all the time.
There are more sensible options for sure for this trip, I agree...

yeah nah the other thing is that for every kilometre of road to which only a sportsbike will do justice, there are hundreds of km of crappy but fun asphalt road where sportsbikes fear to tread. potholes, gravel, uneven surfaces are your friends hereabouts!
