Anybody in Perth
 

Hi, anybody in Perth end of next week? I'm arriving on the 4th and need advice to get my bike (German registration) on the road on Mondat afterwards. Anybody knows what must be done to have it registered in Oz for a few months?

German Numberplate? Suppose you speak german then? Have a look at Rainers Outback Guide, there's a lot of info aubout registering your bike in Oz:

Went through it in 2003 and it was pretty straight forward, but a CDP smoothed things a lot. Drop me a mail if you need any further info.

First you do NOT want to register it! You never want to actually "register" a bike in any foreign country if you are only travelling through.

The bike is legal as is to ride in Aus so long as you have the appropriate papers before you arrive. See the Paperwork page - under Planning on left of this page, and see Paperwork. Lots of Aus info there.

@Kudi, thx, I had quite forgotten about Rainer's page. Stumbled across it some time ago. I'll check it out.
The intended trip will be roughly up the west coast to Darwin, down to Adelaide via Alice, to Melbourne and up to Sydney. Inbetween Tasmania and NPs on the way. I've got half a year's time :-))

@Grant, well, basically yes, but I was told by a German guy who had toured Oz on his bike, that he had to have it checked for roadworthiness & have it registered just for the time he was in the country. I've got the mandatory Carnet du Passage, so that should be ok.

Infact it seems as if temp imports are handled differently depending on where you enter the country.

yes, I arrived in Perth already, but hope to be leaving by Tuesday, heading North along the coast. I was told, there's a biker's meeting in Gascoyne Jct next weekend. Maybe I'll make it, depends on customs & quarantine tomorrow.

How's your intinerary for Oz? Maybe we're travelling more or less on the same route. I plan to go up to Darwin within the next two months, after that I'll travel south to Adelaide via Alice and further to Melbourne.

We came through Perth about 2 weeks ago, I'm guessing you've got your paperwork sorted by now so I won't go on about it.

Definately make it to the Off Centre rally, we passed heaps of bikers going that way when we were travelling up the Great Central. It looks like a pretty unique rally, most bikes we saw were dual-sporters or custom beemers, all decked out for serious distance riding. We seriously considered turning around and heading back to the West coast to go, but it would have put us too far out of our way.

We're in Alice at the moment, bike troubles will be keeping us here for a good week or two as well. Not a bad place to stop though.

PS We're staying at a backpackers called Annie's Place, on Traeger Ave, off Gap street. $16 a night for a dorm room, there's a locked parking area out the back, internet is $3 an hour and there's an adjoining bar with cheap food. I'd recommend.

procedure for oz paper work.
 

I,ve just come back from oz with my own bike,i shipped it to fremantle and this is how the procedure goes.
You need a carnet for your bike and first you have to book an ispection with customs to get the carnet stamped at the port of entry,then you have to go to the quarantine office to book an inspection for them to check it,s clean and bug free ,they give you a certificate of release from the port,you have to then get a temporary permit from the department of planning and infastructure to ride your bike to the test centre to get it chcked for road worthyness then they issue you with temporary registration and third party insurance and it,s does not cost that much for it all just alot of running about from office to office.

maybe we have to fix more on our bikes, because my XT 600 needs 1-2 Liter on 1.000 Km, too much!!
and we just got a new piston in dubai 6 months ago.
now we need a goog place to look after it in Australia / Perth!!
