Aluminium luggage

Is anybody in Oz fabricating aluminium panniers and frames? If so, how do they compare in price to European models?

Hi,

no one makes alloy panniers in Oz, have a look at http://www.motorcycleadventure.com.au/

for touratech and hepco and baker stuff in Oz

G'day skidmark,
I know your frustration, I'm in the process of designing and fabricating a frame (chrome/moly) and 'ally' panniers for my Tiger, I guess no one here in Oz is into such a small market.

Check out this website as it has a homebuilt panniers page under Trip planning, also if you happen to purchase Chris Scott's Adventure Motorcycling book (no commercial endorsement, although I do have a copy), there is a design for the frame.

I can let you know how I get on with my grand design, who knows I might go into production.

Cheers.

thanks macca, I too have a copy of that book and devoured it in a few days! My ideas are very similar to Chris Scotts but my problem is finding someone who can fabricate them at a reasonable cost. I'd be very interested to know how you get on with yours.

If you can get access to a light engineering company they should be able to fabricate the panniers for you, or better still try looking under "Yellow Pages" for Sheetmetal Workers, they deal with not specifically panniers but they do make to order, well they do over here in the West.

Failing all that, I'll keep you posted with my designs.

Cheers

You can also check with Ernie (Overland-Solutions) in the UK. He just made me a rear rack and pannier mounts. He then adapted a set of Touratech's for the purpose. I am VERY happy with it. He went out and bought an R80G/S to fit them, as he knew he'd have more to make in the future. He's done the last setup for Chris Scott, so he knows his business. Distance is not the issue. I live in Canada, Ernie is in the UK. We worked it by e-mail. He'll stand by his work, no matter what. For instance, the powder coater screwed up and forgot to etch the bags before they coated them. This resulted in the coating flaking. Ernie gave them hell and sent me a new set of bags in the mail just this past Monday. This time he’s had them anodized. As well, he’s set me up with new locks and latches, so that the whole situation is just bolt on for me. I’ll send him the old ones back in his shipping packaging and he’s having the powder coater pay for all of this. Impeccable service, if you ask me. As well, the rack and pannier holders are of top-notch quality. You couldn’t ask for more. There’s a bunch of pictures on my website.

If you own a 'Beemer' Munich Motorcycles (Perth W.A.) are agents for Touratech, their website address is listed here (Horizons Unlimited) in the links site. Even if you don't own a 'Beemer' I'm sure they can get in whatever is listed in the Touratech catalogue.
