You mention that your departure may be dependant on where you can buy a 4wd.

Despite how Australians like to depict our country as rugged a 4wd is not necessary unless you actually want to go 4wding or plan on doing the desert 4wd tracks. (Cape York is accessible by 2wd/SUV).

Just something to consider.
