Adventure Motorcycling - Term's Morphology
 

From the content of a historical motorcycling tome now in draft phase, and notes:


[Excerpt]: In 1970, when some of us were just out of short pants, I interviewed Ken Craven. I had purchased a set of his panniers for my 1970 BMW R75/5 from Mike Krauser at Krauser's BMW automobile and motorcycle dealership near Munich, Germany. Craven was most adamant in defining what many of us were doing, calling it and defining it as "motorcycle touring." However, in the text of his book, he several times referred to our pursuits as seeking "adventure."



[Note]: That interview, in 1970, was several years after an American motorcycle adventurer had ridden his BMW motorcycle from Nebraska, USA to the town of Circle, Alaska and then had ridden to the southern most part he could reach of South America. Using a second BMW motorcycle he collected in Munich, Germany, a year later he had ridden to the northern most point he could reach in Europe, and then through (and around the inside of) Africa to a southernmost point. His adventures were well publicized in motorcycle magazines and by BMW. That American was adamant in defining what he had done in the 1960s, calling and defining it as "adventure motorcycling," versus Craven's "motorcycle touring."


[Excerpt]: "And then there was, in 1912-1913, the first motorcyclist to circumnavigate the globe, another American. He wrote in 1912, 'We are not undertaking this extensive trip for pleasure or adventure merely...' He later wrote in his book about that first motorcycle ride around the world: 'Such, in brief, was the inception and growth of my determination to make the first motorcycle tour of the world - to become a modern adventurer.'"


[Note]: From etymology and it's morphology to "adventure motorcycling" there is only one person I can point to as a researcher and writer that put those two words together that way, and he did so in speaking with me personally. While the concept had been around from as early as 1912, it was that 1960s American motorcycle adventurer that birthed the two words together in that form.
